Dustin Poirier With Vicious Attack against McGregor on Deep Waters

Dustin Poirier took aim at UFC 329's Conor McGregor on an episode of Deep Waters.
Dustin Poirier (30-10, 1 NC MMA, 22-9, 1 NC UFC) may have retired from active competition less than a year ago, but he's still got a grudge against one veteran fighter in the sport. On the night of July 11, in UFC 329's main event of the evening, Conor McGregor (22-6 MMA, 10-4 UFC) makes his return to the sport after five years away.
McGregor's opposition during the UFC 329 headlining bout will be No. 6 contender Max Holloway (27-9 MMA, 23-9 UFC) in a welterweight rematch. As with all UFC main events, the UFC 329 headliner will be an advertised maximum of five rounds at five minutes apiece.
Dustin Poirier and Conor McGregor have a history with one another. These two men fought in the fabled Octagon three times, with the former holding a 2-1 lifetime series advantage. Recently, Poirier hinted that he might consider suspending his retirement for a fourth encounter with "The Notorious."
Dustin Poirier Dunks on Conor McGregor in Latest Deep Waters Episode
Poirier is a panelist on CBS Sports' Deep Waters, a weekly roundtable discussion concerning the latest news and issues surrounding the world of MMA. In this week's edition of the podcast, the topic of Conor McGregor's impending return to the Octagon came up.
In the initial fight matching Conor McGregor against Max Holloway, the former overcame a knee injury to submit the latter on the undercard of the first UFC event to air on FS1 on its first broadcast day. After Poirier's co-host, Jorge Masvidal, predicted that Holloway would secure the victory on July 11, "The Diamond" gave his pick for the bout.
"Conor McGregor, I put you to sleep in Abu Dhabi, bud," Dustin Poirier said. "Clip it and rip it! Sleepy Mac!"
Dustin Poirier Doesn't Have Takeaways from First McGregor vs. Poirier Fight
McGregor's first bout against Holloway happened in August of 2013 in Boston. By the time the cage door closes on July 11, nearly 13 years will have passed between confrontations.
Due to the gap in time, Poirier can't analyze the first fight, owing to the fact that both contestants have evolved since then.
"It's too long ago, man," he said to host Chris Weidman. "It's too long ago."
Dustin Poirier Mentions Conor McGregor's Ground Game May Spell Disaster at UFC 329
Chris Weidman noted that Max Holloway's wrestling prowess was bested by Charles Oliveira in their fight this past March. Oliveira's tactics ultimately doomed Holloway that evening. Dustin Poirier cautioned that Conor McGregor may face a similar outcome if he attempts to utilize the ground game on July 11.
"Conor's not that kind of wrestler," he said. "If he does wrestle and doesn't get a takedown or has to scramble, those later rounds, he's going to be gassed."
Moreover, Dustin Poirier believes that the fact that this main event takes place in the welterweight division will determine McGregor's fate that night.
"He's going to be heavier," he said. "I don't think it's good. Max is a volume cardio guy with power now, so I think it's just trouble the later it goes."
