Holly Holm addresses talk of a Ronda Rousey rematch

44 min ago2 min read

Holly Holm made a recent appearance on The Ariel Helwani Show, during which she shared her thoughts on facing the legendary Ronda Rousey in a potential rematch.

Holly Holm and Ronda Rousey have history, so it's only natural that renowned MMA journalist Ariel Helwani asked 'The Preacher's Daughter' about facing Rousey in a rematch. While both women are well past their UFC days, and Rousey doesn't seem as eager to continue fighting following her recent but brief return to MMA, Holm remains as competitive as ever.

Holly Holm is open to rematching Ronda Rousey

Ronda Rousey made a successful return to MMA at MVP MMA 1 on May 16, submitting WMMA pioneer Gina Carano with her signature armbar in just 17 seconds of round one. Despite the win, Rousey did not express any desire to continue fighting and hopes to instead continue building her family. Holly Holm, however, who once faced 'Rowdy' back in 2015, is not only interested in a rematch, but always has been (10:38):

"I've always been open to a rematch with her since the day the fight was over. So, if she wants a rematch, I'm game. Any time. I've always said I'm good with a rematch. You know, right after the fight, it was, 'Hey, do you want to wait for a fight with Ronda?' I said, 'Sure. How long are we gonna wait?' There was no answer. There was no answer from her, she didn't say yes. She just... you know, nothing, and I was like, I don't wanna just sit and wait cause I don't know if she'll ever wanna fight or want a rematch, or if she does come back, will it be with me? So, I don't know. There was no answer."

The two women crossed paths at UFC 193, when Rousey was still an undefeated box office sensation. However, in one of the greatest upsets in MMA history, Holm dominated her from start to finish in front of a record-breaking crowd in Melbourne, Australia, picking Rousey apart on the feet, before knocking her out with a head kick in round two. The win earned Holm the UFC women's bantamweight title and extended her then undefeated record to 10-0. Unfortunately for her, she failed to successfully defend her belt, losing it to Miesha Tate via fifth-round rear-naked choke at UFC 196 in her first and only title defense.

Holm never again became a UFC champion, despite two subsequent cracks at the women's featherweight title and another shot at the women's bantamweight title. She has since been released from her UFC contract and is now back to boxing. She is set to face Stephanie Han in a rematch for the WBA women's lightweight title this Saturday on May 30, having lost the previous bout via unanimous technical decision.
