Marlon Vera is eyeing a triumphant comeback as he heads into a crossroads fight with Charles Jourdain at UFC 331.

Marlon Vera has long been beheld as a skillful striker, known for his knockout power as well as his composure inside the Octagon. "Chito" has also, time and again, earned considerable laudation for his extraordinary durability.

Nevertheless, Vera has lately faced a few setbacks and finds himself on a four-fight skid. He's headed into a much-awaited bantamweight clash -- what some believe is a crossroads fight for him -- at UFC 331 this weekend.

Marlon Vera made his professional MMA debut back in 2010, whereas his UFC promotional debut came in 2014. He's competed primarily at bantamweight, in addition to having fought in featherweight and catchweight matchups as well.

With wins against Davey Grant, Rob Font, and Pedro Munhoz -- as well as knockouts over former UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz and ex-UFC lightweight kingpin Frankie Edgar -- Vera is known to be a threat to any fighter on a given day.

However, his last MMA win came back in 2023, when he bested Pedro Munhoz via unanimous decision. The Ecuadorian has lost four consecutive fights since. His win over Munhoz was followed by a rematch against archrival "Sugar" Sean O'Malley in 2024, whom Vera bested via an injury-induced TKO back in 2020.

Their rematch saw O'Malley defend the UFC bantamweight belt by scoring a dominant unanimous decision win over him. Vera then dropped another unanimous decision verdict against former UFC flyweight kingpin Deiveson Figueiredo later in 2024.

His next appearance was a split decision loss against Aiemann Zahabi last year, followed by a unanimous decision defeat at the hands of David Martinez earlier this year.

Considering the variables at play, certain sections of the MMA community have expressed their concerns about Vera's standing as a notable part of the UFC bantamweight division. Be that as it may, the veteran combatant recently affirmed that he's as confident as ever in his skill and will. So what gives? What could be the Eureka moment that could help the fan-favorite KO artist break free from the shackles of tough times in the sport?

Marlon Vera's introspection could be an X factor against Charles Jourdain at UFC 331

One of the biggest talking points to emerge regarding Marlon Vera as of late has been his shift from longtime coach Jason Parillo to training at his own gym with Raul Rosas Jr. and the Rosas family. But something else that has quite evidently flown under the radar is Vera's admirable introspection!

During his recent conversation with Ariel Helwani on The Ariel Helwani Show, the 33-year-old opened up about how he's asked himself a few tough questions -- chief among them being why he keeps ending up on the wrong end of decision verdicts in close fights.

An important allusion he made was that he'll be looking to up the ante with his activity and play to his strength by utilizing his striking prowess to reestablish himself as a force to be reckoned with at 135 pounds.

He has a tough fighter standing across from him in the form of Canada's Charles Jourdain, who's on a three-fight win streak. The Vera vs. Jourdain bantamweight clash will go down at UFC 331 in Los Angeles on September 19. Can "Chito" pull off yet another thunderous KO? Time will tell.
