ONE Championship’s reigning Flyweight MMA Champion Yuya Wakamatsu has delivered a detailed breakdown of his upcoming title challenger and shared his prediction for how their fight will end.
The 31-year-old Japanese champion defends his crown against the Uzbek finishing machine, Avazbek Kholmirzaev, at ONE SAMURAI 1 on Wednesday, April 29, live from Ariake Arena in Tokyo, Japan.
Yuya Wakamatsu is riding the form of his life. His 20-6 career mark, including 10 wins in ONE, tell the story of a fighter who has competed against some of the biggest flyweight stars in the world, including MMA GOAT Demetrious Johnson, since making his pro MMA debut at the age of 20.
Yuya Wakamatsu Says Kholmirzaev Represents the New Generation

Yuya Wakamatsu has not taken a dismissive view of the challenger standing in front of him. The Japanese champion has studied Kholmirzaev carefully and arrived at an assessment that gives the Uzbek genuine credit across multiple dimensions of the sport.
“My impression of him is that he can do everything. He has submissions and his striking is dangerous too. Overall, he’s a complete fighter. And on top of that, he’s young. He really represents the new generation of MMA,” Yuya Wakamatsu said.
Kholmirzaev arrives as one of the most dangerous challengers the flyweight MMA division has produced. The 25-year-old Uzbek carries a 9-1 ONE record with eight victories via finish and a 15-2 career mark with 14 stoppages.
Champion Yuya Wakamatsu Calls Kholmirzaev the Strongest Opponent of His Career
Despite the respect he holds for the challenger, Yuya Wakamatsu’s mental approach to the fight is rooted in a philosophy that removes the opponent from the center of the picture entirely.
The champion has framed the title defense in terms that place his own performance and growth above any external threat, a mindset that speaks to the self-reliance he has developed across his two title defenses.
“He’s extremely strong, the strongest opponent I’ve ever faced. But at the same time, to me, there is no opponent – only myself to overcome. He’s the ideal opponent for me,” he explained.
That framing carries particular weight given the competition Yuya Wakamatsu has already faced during his title reign. Defeating Moraes, a legendary former champion, and then turning back Pacio, a reigning ONE Strawweight MMA World Champion, across back-to-back title fights represents a level of experience that shapes how a fighter approaches every subsequent challenge.
Yuya Wakamatsu Predicts Ground TKO Finish on April 29
For all the respect Wakamatsu holds for the Uzbek challenger, he has also identified specific vulnerabilities he intends to exploit on April 29. The Japanese champion has run through multiple fight scenarios in preparation and arrived at a clear prediction for how the night ends.
“He does get hit by right hands sometimes. And also, he’s never fought someone stronger than himself – like me. I have a lot of images in my head for all the different scenarios I’ve thought through. But if I had to say, ground TKO. A pound-out finish,” he said.
The Tokyo crowd inside Ariake Arena will provide the backdrop for what promises to be the most dangerous title defense of Wakamatsu’s championship reign.
ONE SAMURAI 1 takes place on Wednesday, April 29, at Ariake Arena in Tokyo, Japan. Stay tuned to MMASucka for full broadcast details as they are confirmed.
