Colby Covington Reacts to Dustin Poirier’s Georgia Arrest With Brutal Verdict

Colby Covington weighed in on Dustin Poirier's Sunday night arrest on public drunkenness.
Dustin Poirier retired from active competition in MMA last summer after dropping a unanimous decision to Max Holloway in UFC 318. What was supposed to have been a peaceful Father's Day celebration with family over the weekend turned sideways Sunday evening.
Dustin Poirier arrested in Georgia
Poirier was arrested in Georgia on a misdemeanor charge of public intoxication. According to reports, he was released the same evening after spending only a few hours in custody, although the circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear.
As supporters expressed concern for the former interim lightweight champion, one familiar critic wasted little time piling on. Longtime rival Covington seized the opportunity to take aim at the 37-year-old, delivering another verbal jab in his trademark fashion.
Reports first surfaced through TMZ Sports, which stated that Poirier was arrested Sunday evening in Georgia and booked on a charge of public drunkenness at approximately 6:38 p.m. He was later released at around 10:15 p.m. local time.
Court records subsequently confirmed that the 37-year-old made an initial court appearance the following morning, although authorities have yet to disclose details regarding what led to the arrest.
Under Georgia law, public intoxication is classified as a misdemeanor offense and can carry penalties of up to one year in jail, a fine of as much as $1,000, or both if a person is convicted. That said, cases involving first-time or lower-level offenses, however, rarely result in lengthy custodial sentences.
In hindsight, the arrest came less than a year after the Louisiana-native officially hung up his gloves from mixed martial arts following a decorated career that saw him capture interim UFC lightweight gold and challenge for the undisputed championship on three separate occasions against Khabib Nurmagomedov, Charles Oliveira, and Islam Makhachev.
While “The Diamond” has not directly addressed the arrest itself, he appeared to acknowledge the attention surrounding the incident with a cryptic message shared to his Instagram story -
"Love you all I'm working on myself."
"Cheers to you, Dustin" - Colby Covington reacts to Poirier's arrest
Colby Covington, who ruled the roost as UFC’s antagonist before the dawn of Sean Strickland and Josh Hokit, didn’t fail to seize the moment.
The former interim welterweight champion mocked Poirier's arrest and took aim at the image he has cultivated throughout his career as one of the UFC's most universally admired figures.
Taking things to X, Covington wrote, “Nothing says role model and family man like being arrested for public intoxication at 37 years old at 6:38 pm… on Father’s Day. Hit me up when you get out the clink @dustinPoirier and I’ll send some RAB Zero to the father of the year.”
The remarks were vintage Covington. Despite not stepping into the Octagon since late 2024, the outspoken 38-year-old has continued to needle fighters across the MMA landscape, ensuring he rarely stays out of the headlines for long.
The self-proclaimed "America's champ" also posted a brief video mocking Poirier. "I just want to take a moment and have a toast to the father of the year, Dustin Poirier. Nothing says role model and family man than being arrested for public intoxication at 37 years old at 6.38 p.m. on Father's Day. Cheers to you, Dustin!"
Dustin Poirier Takes High Road After Covington Mocking
Poirier, meanwhile, has chosen not to engage publicly with Covington's criticism. Instead, his brief social media message appeared more introspective than confrontational.
For now, fans are left waiting to see whether "The Diamond" will provide further clarification about the incident. Given the goodwill Poirier accumulated over a 15-year UFC career and his standing as one of the sport's most popular figures, many supporters seem more focused on his well-being than on trading insults with one of MMA's most notorious provocateurs.
