Dustin Poirier Shares Emotional Sobriety Update As Footage Emerges

For someone whose career, for the most part, was defined by resilience and humility, Dustin Poirier’s recent run-in with the law did raise quite some eyebrows.
Nearly a year after walking away from the sport, the former interim lightweight champion has found himself dealing with a very different kind of fight at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. Now, months after the snafu, “The Diamond” appears to have his head high, fully embracing sobriety.
Dustin Poirier Marks 83 Days of Sobriety
Poirier's June arrest already forced the 37-year-old to confront some uncomfortable truths about his life beyond the Octagon. Now, with the authorities releasing the latest bodycam footage, the incident has been brought back into the spotlight.
The footage shows the Louisiana native being aggressive toward officers while in custody. If anything, the footage is difficult to reconcile with the fighter fans spent years cheering for. Poirier himself appeared to recognize that almost immediately after the arrest, he publicly admitted that alcohol had become a problem and that he needed help.
Months removed from the incident, Poirier recently gave fans a small but meaningful update on Instagram, sharing a screenshot showing that he had reached 83 days of a planned 90-day break from alcohol.
There was no lengthy explanation attached to it. Instead, Poirier paired the screenshot with Johnny Nash's “I Can See Clearly Now.” The choice of song said plenty without requiring much from Poirier himself.
It comes at an uncomfortable time for the retired fighter, with extended footage from his June arrest circulating online. The footage shows the Lightweight fighter repeatedly confronting officers, challenging one of them to fight, and lashing out at fans after being told that people would eventually see what happened.
Dustin Poirier Challenges Officer to Fight
At one point, an officer reminded Poirier that fans had paid to watch him fight, to which he responded, “F**k the fans! F**k you guys!” He also repeatedly challenged officers to release him so they could settle things physically.
“Y'all free me, and we go one-on-one,” he said at one point. The footage is a stark reminder of just how far the situation had spiraled that night. But to his credit, Poirier did not wait for the footage to surface before acknowledging that something was wrong.
Two days after the arrest, he addressed the incident himself. “I'm at the point where I need some help, walking away from fighting hasn't been easy on me and alcohol isn't the answer,” Poirier wrote on Instagram.
He also acknowledged the effect alcoholism had had on his family, writing that alcohol had ruined his father's life and that he would not allow it to do the same to his own.
Life After Fighting has been Harder Than Poirier Expected
Poirier retired in July 2025 after losing the third fight of his trilogy with Max Holloway at UFC 318. It was the end of a 30-10 career that included wins over his arch-nemesis Conor McGregor, Justin Gaethje, and Michael Chandler, along with an interim UFC lightweight championship. In fact, based on his own accounts, it was fighting that gave Poirier a clear purpose. Retirement, however, took that away.
Poirier had already been open about how difficult retirement had been before the arrest. During one such candid interview with Full Send MMA, he admitted that life without fighting had been a constant adjustment, with some days better than others.
He also acknowledged something deeper: without a goal to chase or his family to work for, he could struggle to keep himself on the right track. The airport incident showed just how serious that struggle had become.
Despite all that had gone wrong, his latest update offers a bright spot. He is now 83 days into the 90-day break he set for himself, and for now, he appears focused on seeing it through.
