Dustin Poirier Gets Emotional Discussing Father, Alcohol, and Viral Arrest

Dustin Poirier opened up on the aftermath of his Father's Day arrest last month.
For most fans, the viral video showed only the aftermath, a UFC legend intoxicated at an airport, arguing with police officers as the body cam footage did rounds on the internet.
However, what it didn't show was the emotional burden Dustin Poirier had been carrying long before he ever boarded that flight. Weeks after the incident sparked headlines across the fight world, the former interim UFC lightweight champion has shared the deeply personal story behind one of the lowest moments of his life.
In a recent candid interview, Poirier spoke openly about alcohol, regret, and the painful relationship with his father that continues to shape him, offering an explanation rooted in vulnerability rather than excuses.
Dustin Poirier's comments on the incident
Last month, the 37-year-old was arrested at a Georgia airport after being removed from a flight for allegedly being too intoxicated to travel. Bodycam footage of the incident quickly spread across social media, showing the retired lightweight contender confronting the authorities before being taken into custody.
The incident sparked widespread discussion, particularly as it came less than a year after Poirier stepped away from mixed martial arts following his final UFC appearance. While many questioned whether retirement had been a difficult adjustment, the veteran made it clear that he wasn't interested in avoiding accountability.
Speaking on Steven Bartlett's Diary of a CEO podcast, Dustin Poirier admitted he knew he had made a mistake.
"When I feel like that, I know I shouldn't drink, and I drank anyway," Dustin Poirier began, So, you know, not that my father or anything's an excuse. Obviously, I did what I did, but I knew better in the moment when I'm feeling like that to drink or do anything. You know, alcohol has never benefited me, especially in times like that where I'm mentally not the best."
The fallout didn't end with the arrest. “The Diamond” revealed that the incident has already cost him sponsorships and work opportunities, admitting it has been an expensive mistake both financially and personally.

He also made it clear that he regrets the way he treated those involved that day. In fact, Dustin Poirier said he asked his attorney to contact the officer who arrested him so he could personally apologize and thank him for handling the situation professionally.
One thing Poirier refuses to do, however, is watch the now-viral footage of his arrest.
"To see myself in that condition, disrespecting police officers, disrespecting workers at the airport, disrespecting myself, disrespecting my family. I just don't feel like it's going to benefit me to see that," he said
Instead, the Louisiana native says he has accepted what happened and is focused on learning from it rather than repeatedly reliving one of the most embarrassing moments of his life.
Dustin Poirier's Emotional Admission about Family Background
While taking full responsibility for his actions, Dustin Poirier also explained the emotional circumstances that led him to drink that day. The arrest occurred on Father's Day, a date that carries painful memories because of his complicated relationship with his father.
Describing his dad as "a classic drunk," Poirier shared that alcohol addiction has defined much of his father's life - "He's been in jail plenty of times for alcohol-related stuff... He's actually homeless right now," Dustin Poirier revealed.
Poirier explained that he had recently tried to help his father get back on his feet, only to watch him return to the streets. That emotional weight stayed with him as he traveled on Father's Day.
"Part of that, me getting in trouble at the airport was, and it's not my weight to carry, you know, but I just felt, I tried to help him out and he's back out on the street," he said. "It's like he almost doesn't want help, you know?"
He admitted he couldn't stop thinking about his father while waiting at the airport, saying, "I was just kind of, on Father's Day, I was traveling to work and I just couldn't stop thinking about my father, and I started drinking in the airport and that's kind of what led to the incident."
Dustin Poirier Willing to Own Up to Actions
On the bright side, Poirier (30-10-0, 1NC) never tried to use his family situation as an excuse. Instead, he repeatedly accepted responsibility for what happened, admitting he knew he shouldn't have turned to alcohol that day.
His interview, on the other hand, offered a rare look into the personal struggles behind the headlines. While the arrest became a viral story, Dustin Poirier's focus now appears to be on learning from the mistake, making amends where he can, and moving forward one step at a time.
