Glover Teixeira gave a full breakdown of what exactly happened when Raoni Barcelos blacked out after the KO from Raul Rosas Jr. at UFC Vegas 121

What was supposed to be a thrilling main event showcase at UFC Vegas 121 turned into a terrifying medical emergency for Brazilian bantamweight Raoni Barcelos. Fighting top prospect Raul Rosas Jr. in a grueling five-round battle, Barcelos suddenly suffered a frightening blackout mid-fight, leading to a fifth-round TKO stoppage that left the combat sports world deeply concerned.

After spending three days in a Las Vegas hospital undergoing extensive medical testing, the underlying cause behind the sudden collapse has finally been revealed.

A Mind Stronger Than the Body

Former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Glover Teixeira, who was in Barcelos' corner for the fight, recently appeared on the Overdogs Podcast to clear up what happened inside the Octagon. According to Teixeira, medical scans revealed that the 39-year-old veteran suffered a traumatic brain injury that caused acute swelling, triggering an automatic physical shutdown.

"They went in and ran the tests. There was some swelling in his brain, so it was a traumatic brain injury, and maybe that swelling caused him to blackout," Teixeira explained. "It was the body's defense mechanism. 'Let's shut this down because this guy isn't going to stop.' His mind was stronger than his body, right? He didn't want to give up."

Teixeira admitted that the episode created instant panic in the corner because it wasn't a standard knockout punch. Instead, Barcelos collapsed unexpectedly, leading team members to initially fear a heart condition or severe stroke before brain scans provided definitive answers.

According to official UFC statistics, Barcelos holds a decorated 22-6 professional MMA record built on world-class grappling and relentless heart. That refusal to back down was fully present in Las Vegas, but his body ultimately hit the emergency switch to protect itself from catastrophic damage.

Barcelos has officially been discharged from the hospital and is back home recovering. While a lengthy stretch of rest and medical clearance awaits before any potential return to competition, Teixeira's update offers welcome relief after one of the scariest moments in recent UFC history.
