Raoni Barcelos opens up about his frightening health scare at UFC Vegas 121, admitting retirement remains possible as he awaits a diagnosis.

Raoni Barcelos is currently navigating an uncertain future after suffering a scary medical episode during his UFC Vegas 121 main event against Raul Rosas Jr. The Brazilian veteran lost consciousness in the fifth round of their Sept. 26 encounter and was rushed to the hospital, leaving fans worried about his health and his future in the sport.

Now, nearly three weeks later, Barcelos is still waiting for a clear diagnosis. While the 39-year-old has been noticing steady improvements, he acknowledges that retirement is a possibility as he focuses on getting better.

Raoni Barcelos Still Searching for Answers After UFC Scare

Barcelos was ahead on the scorecards when his body suddenly began to shut down during the fight. He recalled experiencing numbness before losing consciousness, with no clear explanation for the episode yet available.

“Unfortunately, we don't know what happened,” Barcelos told MMA Fighting. “It was a sudden illness. I fell ill, and I felt my whole body really starting to go numb. After that, I don't remember anything.

He is undergoing further medical examinations in Las Vegas, including neurological evaluations and MRI scans. Furthermore, he has been visiting the UFC Performance Institute for rehabilitation and testing as doctors try to determine the cause.

Retirement Remains an Option for the UFC Veteran

While Barcelos hopes to return to competition, he understands that his health must come first. The bantamweight has not ruled out retirement, even though he remains reluctant to walk away from the sport.

“It hasn't been ruled out,” Barcelos admitted when discussing retirement. “This is a very difficult time because we're athletes, we're fighters, and you never want to stop.”

Barcelos shared that his doctors have instructed him to take a six-month suspension from taking any head shots while ensuring he keeps his heart within a healthy range.  Even with the uncertainty hanging over him, he is staying positive about his recovery and feels grateful for the support he received from his family and the UFC. For now, the seasoned fighter is focused on getting answers before making any decision about his future.

His comeback to the Octagon will hinge on the medical results, leaving the next chapter of his career up in the air as he continues to heal.
