Islam Makhachev has praised Ian Machado Garry, calling him one of the most dangerous opponents in the division and predicting he could become UFC champion.

In the lead-up to UFC 330, Islam Makhachev viewed Ian Machado Garry as just another opponent he had to defend his title against. However, after sharing the octagon with the Irish contender, the reigning champion’s assessment of Garry has changed significantly.

Makhachev was expected to secure a dominant victory, as he usually does when he fights; however, against Garry, he had to push himself to a competitive fight and secure a hard-fought decision.

Recently speaking on the ‘Ushatayka’ YouTube channel, Makhachev discussed the welterweight division and reflected on his recent opponent. The pound-for-pound king now considers Garry one of the most dangerous and serious opponents in the division.

Makhachev also predicted that the Irishman could eventually become UFC champion once he is no longer competing.

“I consider one of the most dangerous and serious opponents to be my last opponent, Ian Garry, I think he will become champion when I leave,” Makhachev said.

Garry impressed fans with his performance, giving Makhachev the toughest test of his career. The Irish star showed great takedown defense and made it back to his feet after being taken down, landing short punches throughout while pressed against the cage. After five rounds, it went to the judges, who scored two 46-49 and 47-48 in favor of the P4P king.

The performance left a lasting impression. Despite falling short against the Dagestani star, the Irishman showed enough ability to convince Makhachev that he has the tools to reach the top of the welterweight division eventually.

As for his next challenge, Makhachev is expected to face Carlos Prates or Michael Morales. Talking about when he will return to the octagon, he revealed details about his injuries and the expected date of his comeback.
