Conor McGregor is trumpeting his return to the Octagon, but a toxic mix of diminished skills, long layoffs, and severe legal troubles means fans are looking at a faded superstar rather than a conquering champion..

Conor McGregor signaled his return to the UFC. With fanfare and social media abuzz, fans heralded a return that they hope captivates the attention of both hardcore and casual fans. From afar, questions abound about McGregor, from drawing power to interest to skills and perception; most questions exist more than answers.

Conor McGregor: The Appeal

McGregor hasn't fought since July 10, 2021, as he sat on the cage floor, unable to stand. Before that, he'd lost two of his last three fights, being stopped in all of them. However, McGregor brings something that every other veteran fighter lacks when making a comeback: promotional backing.

The UFC, whether owned by Zuffa or TKO, is still helmed by Dana White. White mixes a street preacher vibe with an angry football coach, using the microphone as his bullhorn, and will push the McGregor narrative. From a money viewpoint, the former lightweight champion captures attention.

White knows this. He willingly allows McGregor to conduct himself in the most boorish way and still provides cover. How else do you excuse throwing a dolly through a passenger van window or slurring fighters based on ethnicity and religion? The UFC will ensure McGregor makes the rounds to drum up interest. However, what version can people expect?

Conor McGregor: The Skillset

McGregor made his millions with striking, the ability to end a fight with power. Power is the last part of a combat athlete that leaves them, yet, in his last couple of fights, those punches lacked the same snap that ends a bout with stunning efficiency.

On the ground, he is immobile and scared, turtling and struggling to breathe. Father Time is undefeated in MMA. Reflexes dull and chins weaken. If you expect the vintage McGregor, 2021 seems like light-years away.

Conor McGregor: The Stench

An Irish juror, during a civil case, found the UFC vet liable in a sexual assault case. That makes the most marketable UFC fighter a convicted sex offender. On top of that, during the trial, McGregor admitted to using cocaine. While fighters aren't role models, brazen substance abuse tarnishes the image.

Have we heard all of the slugs, watched all of the bad behavior, and seen McGregor bleed all over the canvas? At one time, McGregor held the UFC on his shoulders, making them millions via pay-per-view.

He is no longer the same fighter. People will watch, but it will lack the same chaotic environment. What's sadder, despite making millions, McGregor refusing to stay retired or the UFC trying to circle back to an aging fighter?
