UFC Atlanta: Interesting Tidbits About Fighters on June 14 Show

For its fifth visit to Atlanta, the UFC delivered on a stirring clash between two of the top welterweights on the planet when Kamaru Usman returned from a nearly two-year layoff in the UFC Atlanta to defeat the hulking Joaquin Buckley. Using his superior wrestling, “The Nigerian Nightmare” stifled much of the younger fighter’s offense to log a convincing unanimous decision victory. 

In the co-main event of UFC Atlanta, former strawweight queen Rose Namajunas got back into the win column by pushing past strong flyweight contender Miranda Maverick. Surviving a potentially fight-ending submission in round two, “Thug” rallied to nab the unanimous decision. 

Now, let’s take a closer look at some post-event facts for UFC Atlanta’s main card competitors.

UFC Atlanta: Alonzo Menifield vs. Oumar Sy

His decision win over Sy marked his fourth ever victory brought to him by the judges’ scorecards. This win over Sy extended his current win streak to two in a row, his first streak to go past one victory since December 2023. 

His victory over Sy marked the second undefeated opponent in a row that he has defeated.

Sy’s loss to Menifield spelt the end to his 11-bout winning streak dating back to 2019 when he made his professional debut.

His defeat to Menifield marked the first setback of both his UFC tenure and his career. Sy’s appearance at UFC Atlanta stood as the first time he competed on the main card of a UFC event.

UFC Atlanta: Mansur Abdul-Malik vs. Cody Brundage

Mansur Abdul-Malik

Abdul-Malik’s spot at UFC On ESPN 69 marked his second promotional bout of 2025, competing once before in February at UFC Fight Night: Cejudo vs. Song. His technical decision victory over Brundage stands as the first time that he won a match without finishing his opponent, having stopped all eight of previous adversaries. 

With the victory, Abdul-Malik moves to 9-0 as a professional.

Brundage’s defeat to Abdul-Malik marked a return to the loss column, having gotten back into the winner’s circle last March with a knockout triumph over Julian Marquez.

He is now 3-5 with one no-contest in his past nine contests and has now lost three fights by decision as a professional.

UFC Atlanta: Raoni Barcelos vs. Cody Garbrandt

Barcelos’ appearance at UFC Atlanta marked his 13th fight in the promotion, It was also his second scrap of 2025 after handing the prospective Payton Talbott his first loss at UFC 311.

His victory over Garbrandt extended his winning streak to three in a row. This clash with Garbrandt during UFC Atlanta marked the first time he shared the Octagon with a former UFC champion.

Garbrandt’s defeat to Barcelos marked his second loss in a row. His spot on the main card of UFC Atlanta was not only his first contest of 2025, it was also his first after more than a year away from competition since suffering a second round submission setback to Deiveson Figueiredo at UFC 300.

He is now 2-4 in his last six fights.

UFC Atlanta: Edmen Shahbazyan vs. Andre Petroski

Shahbazyan’s win over Petroski during UFC Atlanta marked his second consecutive victory after previously knocking out Dylan Budka back in February.  His decision triumph against Petroski also became his first win by way of the judge’s scorecards since 2018 after he narrowly bested Darren Stewart. 

Exiting UFC Atlanta,  Shahbazyan is now 3-1 in his past four contests.

Petroski’s defeat to Shahbazyan brought an end to his three-bout win streak.

He is now 8-3 since arriving in the UFC after competing on the Ultimate Fighter Season 29, where he made it to the semi finals before being eliminated by eventual tournament winner Bryan Battle.

His loss to Shahbazyan marked his first professional setback by decision, with the last time he was defeated in similar fashion coming all the way back in 2016 during his time as an amateur. 

UFC Atlanta: Rose Namajunas vs. Miranda Maverick

Namajunas’ win over Maverick marked her third victory in the flyweight class after making her debut in it back in 2023.

In addition, her divisional record at 125-lb now stands at 3-2. Her victory against Maverick marked her seventh professional win by decision.

Maverick’s defeat to Namajunas marked the end of her four-fight win streak dating back to June 2023.

She is now 6-2 in her past eight bouts. In all four of her UFC losses, she has never been stopped.

UFC Atlanta Main Event: Kamaru Usman vs. Joaquin Buckley

Kamaru Usman

Usman’s triumph over Buckley marked his first victory since 2021 after trouncing Colby Covington at UFC 268.  It was also his first company win in a nontitle affair since 2018

His win over Buckley marked his 11th professional victory by decision, making it his 11th overall UFC win by points. 

Joaquin Buckley

Buckley’s setback to Usman marked his first defeat since December 2022. It also spelled his first loss at welterweight since dropping down to the weight class in 2023.

He’s now entered the loser’s circle for the first time after previously accumulating a six-fight winning streak. His tilt against Usman marked his second contest in a row facing a previous 170-lb belt-holder after finishing Colby Covington in his last fight, who once captured interim gold.
