Can Zhang Mingyang Bounce Back at UFC Macau?
Zhang Mingyang heads back to the Octagon Saturday in UFC Macau. Hank Strandberg has more.
Back in action for his first bout of 2026, light heavyweight contender Zhang Mingyang takes center stage at the UFC’s Macau card, where he looks to reestablish himself as a legitimate threat to the division's upper echelon.
Zhang Mingyang Hadn't Seen Second Round Almost a Decade
First rising to prominence during his stint on the preeminent Asian mixed martial arts series Road to UFC in 2022, Zhang had amazingly earned a contract with the promotion after starching Tuco Tokkos in just under four minutes. The win not only rose his then eight-fight winning streak to nine in a row, it also marked his return to the light heavyweight class after almost two years fighting at heavyweight.
Although his debut in the company would be delayed due to nagging injuries that kept him out of the cage for quite some time, the hype surrounding “Mountain Tiger” only continued to steadily grow. Gaining a solid reputation as a reliable finisher, all of Zhang’s victories over the course of his lengthy stay in the win column had come inside the first round.
His freshman Octagon outing finally came at UFC 298, where he picked up another swift triumph over Brendson Ribeiro, netting his first Performance of the Night bonus. From here, Zhang quickly shot up the ladder at 205-lb, picking up another two wins against Ozzy Diaz and Anthony Smith, as well as a pair of post-fight awards to go along with them. He also had managed to crack the top 15 of the weight class, slotting himself at the number 14 spot.
Zhang Mingyang Sees Winning Streak End at Hands of Johnny Walker
Despite his penchant for ending his fights early and spectacularly, Zhang encountered his first real taste of adversity in the organization when he met perennial contender Johnny Walker in his first promotional main event at UFC Shanghai last August. Unable to land any significant blows to the Brazilian, the native hero was unfortunately dispatched by second round knockout, leading to his first defeat since 2019.
Can Zhang Mingyang Bounce Back After First UFC Loss?
The setback to Walker in Shanghai ended up taking a lot of wind out of Zhang’s sails, with the rising Chinese star dropping the first match of his tenure in the UFC. By the end of the year, he also would surrender his place in the rankings following a period of inactivity. Now more eager than before to prove that he has what it takes to dominate the division, "Mountain Tiger” is aiming to kick off his 2026 run on a high note when he meets American finisher Alonzo Menifield this weekend at UFC Macau.
Achieving his spot on the roster in 2018 after a successful showing on the Contender Series, Menifield has embarked on a UFC journey filled with ups and downs. Although wins over venerable competition like Paul Craig, Jimmy Crute, and Dustin Jacoby have earned him the respect of fans, the 38-year old has never been quite able to break through into top contender status. While he did lose his last bout to Volkan Oezdemir by knockout at UFC Fight Night 265, “Atomic” still occupies the number 15 spot on the light heavyweight rankings.
What Victory Means for Zhang Mingyang Saturday
For Zhang, a victory in Macau is necessary to not only get himself back in the winner’s circle, but also to keep his dream of becoming the first male UFC Chinese champion alive. Although that first UFC defeat can crush even the most stalwart athlete's confidence, Zhang will have to dig deep and trust in his power if he wants to walk out of the Galaxy Arena with one more win on his record.
