Ilia Topuria stated once on the Joe Rogan show that he prefers carbohydrates and electrolytes more while preparing for his fights.
We all know how protein is an essential component for building a fit and muscular body. Fitness influencers and coaches often stress on including adequate amounts of protein in the everyday diet. Surprisingly, one of the elite UFC fighters of recent times, Ilia Topuria, has a differing opinion on the popular belief. He stressed the importance of carbohydrates while he is inside the octagon.
What did Ilia Topuria say About Having Carbohydrates?
Topuria has established himself as one of the lethal strikers in UFC history. Defeating the likes of Alexander Volkanovski, Max Holloway, Charles Oliveira, and more, his diet and workout routine generated heavy curiosity. In a previous interaction on The Joe Rogan Experience Podcast, Topuria claimed that he does not need protein to fuel him inside the octagon. Rather, he needed carbohydrates and electrolytes to keep him going.
‘El Matador’ stated, “I don't used to eat any proteins, because it doesn't help you at all to have a great performance inside the octagon, right? Because the protein doesn't give you any glucose. Glucose that your body needs at that time. Everything you need is electrolytes and carbohydrates. That's all you need.”
Such a statement created a lot of controversy. But most people actually missed what the Spaniard wanted to convey. Protein is surely the most important part that gives the body fuel and helps to build muscle. What he intended to say is that most people are afraid of carbohydrates or underestimate the power of the same.
Topuria was right. In terms of performance inside the octagon, carbohydrates will definitely give him more energy. It will also help him to last longer in training, in turn, making his body more durable in the future.
Currently nursing some brutal injuries after his loss to Justin Gaethje, Topuria is on the verge of a comeback. While he has already confirmed the same, Dana White and co. are still undecided on which opponent he will be facing next.
