Conor McGregor revisits pre-UFC message to renew calls for the MMA organization to book his next fight

Conor McGregor has piqued fan interest with his optimistic approach to the unfortunate knee injury that marred his much-awaited MMA comeback last month. 

The 38-year-old has now revisited an old social media post -- a message -- he'd directed at the UFC, so as to renew his calls for them to book his next fight.

Conor McGregor endured a horrific mishap during his lightweight MMA matchup, a trilogy clash, against Dustin Poirier in the main event of UFC 264. The Irishman, who later revealed that he'd entered the fight with a hurt ankle and stress fractures on his leg, suffered a gruesome injury to his lower left leg. 

That was back in July of 2021. McGregor and his team confirmed that he'd sustained a fractured fibula and tibia, for which he underwent surgery. The former UFC featherweight and lightweight champion worked extensively on rehabilitating the surgically repaired left leg. 

The Dublin native was linked to multiple potential opponents since. He was officially set to return against Michael Chandler at UFC 303 in June 2024, but another injury, this time to his left pinky toe, ruled him out of the welterweight clash against Chandler. 

"The Notorious" finally returned to the Octagon in the main event of UFC 329 on July 11. He faced Max Holloway in a welterweight matchup, a rematch of their featherweight clash from 2013 wherein he'd outpointed the Hawaiian. The Irish sports icon had overcome a left knee injury to beat Holloway in their first encounter. 

Unfortunately, the rematch played out quite differently. McGregor, after his five-year break from MMA, was afflicted with another leg injury -- this time a right knee injury -- which resulted in his losing to Holloway via first-round TKO in the UFC 329 headliner. 

Following that, McGregor recently announced he'd be going under the knife again, in what he noted would be his fifth knee surgery. The fearsome knockout artist provided fans with a positive update on his health after the surgery. 

Moreover, McGregor has now taken to X (formerly known as Twitter) and harked back to an X post (then-known as a tweet) of his from June of 2012. 

It comprised a message he'd openly sent to then-UFC president (now-UFC CEO and president) Dana White and the UFC organization as a whole. McGregor, in the old message, wrote:

Revisiting the same in an X post here in August of 2026, McGregor appears to have reinvigorated his campaign for his next fight to be booked. 

Capping off his X post with a 'folded hands' emoji, McGregor indicated that he'd like the UFC to schedule his next fight. The combat sports megastar reacted to his old message and implied that he's still eager for them to give him an opportunity to compete. He wrote, "And still!"

Conor McGregor's next MMA fight in the UFC has been a point of considerable debate and discussion

Among the key talking points heading into UFC 329 was a conversation that Conor McGregor had with veteran MMA journalist Ariel Helwani. The beloved fighter had confirmed that, after UFC 329, he'd have just one fight left on his UFC deal. 

Furthermore, McGregor added that the UFC was looking to book the last fight on his contract for April 2027, which he affirmed was too far away for his liking.

Needless to say, a number of fans and experts debated that he could consider free agency -- perhaps take his talents to the BKFC, which he co-owns -- after finishing his final UFC fight next year. 

However, his injury at UFC 329 added another nuance to the discussions surrounding his career. McGregor, as he himself signaled, is seeking to return for his "last dance" UFC fight during next year's UFC International Fight Week (July 2027). 

In a nutshell, some of his supporters have pointed out that he could depart the UFC. A few have pondered whether he'd possibly cross over to boxing and face legendary pugilist Manny Pacquiao inside the squared circle, or perhaps box against Floyd Mayweather Jr. in a rematch.
