Conor McGregor Shares Emotional Message Over Disheartening Fight Delays

Conor McGregor is stuck on the sidelines again, and at this point, even the "Notorious" one is feeling the weight of it. After waiting five grueling years to make his grand return at UFC 329, his comeback against Max Holloway vanished in a flash.

Just 69 seconds in, McGregor landed awkwardly on a roundhouse kick, tore his ACL and meniscus, and found himself right back on the injury shelf. Taking to Instagram, the former two-division UFC champion got unusually honest about the sheer mental grind of getting ready for fights that keep getting torn away from him.

"The amount of work I put in, without getting even a semblance of a fight back, is really disheartening," McGregor posted. "But is it? That work is still there. Now, I am being called upon for more work. More discipline. More growth. What is my problem then? None. I don't have one. Thank you, God."

It's a tough pill to swallow for combat sports fans. McGregor spent half a decade recovering from that horrific leg break against Dustin Poirier back in July 2021, only to blow out his knee in under a minute and a half. Dana White already confirmed that knee surgery will keep the Irish superstar out of action for at least a full year.

McGregor isn't calling it quits just yet. Instead, he is already mapping out the ultimate exit strategy. The Dublin native teased that his next fight will officially be his "Last Dance" in mixed martial arts.

He's aiming high, targeting a trilogy fight against Holloway during International Fight Week in July 2027 to fulfill the final bout on his current contract.

The history between these two goes all the way back to August 2013, when a young McGregor beat Holloway by decision, ironically, while fighting through a torn ACL suffered mid-bout. Mixed martial arts has a funny way of bringing things full circle. Holloway has already said he is down to wait for McGregor to heal, setting up a massive rubber match down the road.

Watching the sport's biggest icon deal with another multi-year layoff is painful, but McGregor seems strangely at peace with the long road back. Whether his body can handle one more brutal fight camp remains to be seen, but nobody should expect him to ride off into the sunset without giving fans one last spectacle.
