George Staines Makes History with Thunderous KO!

George Staines (11-0 MMA, 1-0 DWCS) entered Tuesday night's DWCS 94 having yet to lose in his professional career as a fighter. Prior to the Sept. 29 card, he was a stalwart on the European MMA scene with a perfect 10-0 record.

Most recently, he was a member of the active roster of Cage Warriors, going 4-0. It was a little more than three months ago when he defeated Conor McCarthy (7-1 MMA) with a second-round submission by way of standing rear-naked choke during Cage Warriors 207. 

DWCS 94 took a slight hit ahead of the show, when the planned featherweight contest between Ilias Bulaid and Erick Visconde was announced as canceled due to the former falling ill in the final hours before the show. This left the event with only four fights, with Staines' contest against Loai Abushaar serving as the headliner.

Although this fight was slated for three rounds at five minutes per round, George Staines wasted little time completing the assignment. Staines completed a takedown on Abushaar in the opening round's first 30 seconds, leading to him going to the back clinch to secure another takedown.

As the fight's opening minute reached its conclusion, Staines executed a slam, dropping Abushaar with an audible thud. A quick burst of ground and pound wrapped up the contest. 

Time of the knockout, One minute and one second into the opening round of action. With Tuesday's result, George Staines made Contender Series history with the first-ever knockout by way of slam in the 10-year run of the midweek MMA promotion. Upon Staines finishing the knockout, the telecast cut to a shot of Paddy Pimblett cheering in the audience.

"Remember the name George Staines, because he could be the next big name coming out of the UK!," said John Schiffren, who was working DWCS 94 as the blow-by-blow commentator on Tuesday night.

Staines Secures UFC Contract at Show's End Tuesday Night

With the postponement of the Ilias Bulaid vs. Erick Visconde bout making for a shorter than expected evening at the Meta Apex in Enterprise, NV, George Staines had a quicker wait to find out whether or not he'd become the newest member of the UFC's active roster. UFC CEO Dana White didn't keep the prospects waiting too long for their answer.

"All right, George, you were up against a massive guy at 155 lbs," White began, "and you absolutely destroyed him! One of the greatest finishes ever! You made it look easy! Congratulations and welcome to the UFC!"

All told, every fighter who won their respective bout on Tuesday night secured a UFC contract. Through eight weeks of this season, 38 fighters who have appeared on Contender Series have secured a contract.
