Jade Jones Open to Boxing Cris Cyborg in the Future
Following her emphatic win at Misfits this past weekend, Jade Jones has opened up about a potential Cris Cyborg fight.
Two-time Olympic gold medalist Jade Jones has transitioned from taekwondo to boxing extremely well. A recognisable name to combat sports fans, Jones returned to the ring this past weekend on the Misfits undercard.
Debuting in March this year for MF-professional, she scored a highlight-reel knockout over Egypt Criss on her debut. She then went on to TKO FederiKita on her second appearance.
This past weekend, she picked up the MFB women's super middleweight title with a win over Sheena Bathroy, who is best known for her career in slapfighting, rather than in boxing.
She's levels above the girls that she's been fighting against and needs actual competition. She's an elite athlete, having won Olympic gold at both the London Olympics in 2012 and the Rio Olympics in 2016. That step up in competition could come in the form of former UFC champion Cris Cyborg.
Jade Jones Indicates Cris Cyborg Fight Could Happen
Misfits promoter, Mams Taylor, has mentioned that Cris Cyborg could be a potential opponent for Jones. When asked about whether she would be interested in a fight with the Brazilian, the 41-year-old Welsh athlete said: "I'm just buzzing that they're talking about these big fights already. I'm a legend in taekwondo, and she's a legend in MMA, so I think it could make for a firework fight".
Speaking after her big win in Newcastle, Jones admitted that she "didn't really do my plan, I was supposed to box".
When asked about Cyborg, Jones was realistic and humble about the prospect of fighting the MMA legend. She said, "Obviously, she's a very top competitor, so who knows? Maybe I need a couple more first, but she's definitely in my sights".
Would Cyborg entertain a potential Misfits fight? Absolutely. She's a prize fighter and expects a name as big as Cris Cyborg to be paid well if she transitions over to MF Pro.
