Mario Bautista is out for revenge in UFC 329 vs. Cory Sandhagen.

Seven years after suffering the first loss of his professional career to Cory Sandhagen, fate has now presented Mario Bautista the golden opportunity to rewrite that chapter. When the two meet at UFC 329 during International Fight Week, the stakes will extend well beyond settling old scores.

After bouncing back from a unanimous decision loss to Umar Nurmagomedov with an emphatic submission victory over Vinicius Oliveira, the Arizona native believes he's a far more complete fighter than the one Sandhagen submitted during his debut back in 2019. Now, instead of simply looking for revenge, Bautista wants to make a statement against “The Sandman,” and he has no intention of leaving that statement in the hands of the judges.

Mario Bautista Reveals Gameplan Against Cory Sandhagen

Ahead of next weekend’s UFC 329 fight weekend at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Bautista has made it clear that his approach against Sandhagen will revolve around pressure, wrestling, and above all, a sensational finish.

"I'm gonna be hunting that finish. I think it's obvious where he's not really the best, which is on the mat," the 33-year-old said in an exclusive to Home of Fight. Rather than allowing the two-title contender to dictate range with his movement and striking, Bautista intends to force grappling exchanges from the outset, believing they represent the clearest path to victory.

He pointed to the three-round nature of the contest as another reason why he can't afford a patient approach - “I'm gonna be hunting for that finish. Pushing hard. We got three rounds. So I'm gonna have to get on the gas right away.”

Mario Bautista Looking to Rebound July 11

Last year in October, his eight-fight winning streak came to an end in a unanimous decision loss to Nurmagomedov, a result that convinced him not to leave close fights in the judges' hands whenever possible.

Reflecting on that, he added, "I can't just let him get away with a decision and run around or anything. I think it's gonna be an exciting fight."

The confidence comes after an impressive rebound earlier this year, when Bautista (17-3-0) submitted Vinicius Oliveira, reminding the division that his climb toward title contention was far from over.

Familiar Opponent Presents Perfect Measuring Stick

Although Bautista insists his focus is on the future, it's impossible to ignore the history between the two bantamweights.

Their first meeting came in January 2019, when a rising Sandhagen secured a first-round armbar victory over Bautista in what remains the earliest defeat of the latter's professional career. Seven years later, both fighters have evolved considerably.

Sandhagen (18-6-0) has established himself as one of the UFC's perennial contenders, earning victories over several top-ranked opponents, including Deiveson Figueiredo, Rob Font, Marlon Vera, Song Yadong, and Frankie Edgar, before falling short in his most recent title challenge against Merab Dvalishvili.

Despite that setback, the 34-year-old remains one of the most technically gifted fighters in the division.

Sizing Up Mario Bautista

Bautista, meanwhile, quietly stringed together one of the strongest streaks in the division outside the championship picture. Before his loss to Nurmagomedov, he had pieced together eight consecutive victories, defeating established names such as Jose Aldo, Ricky Simon, and former Bellator champion Patchy Mix.

Now Bautista, who is No. 5 in the bantamweight rankings, sees UFC 329 as more than an opportunity to avenge an old defeat. A convincing win over someone of Sandhagen's (No. 4-ranked) caliber would likely be the biggest of his career and could propel him closer to the title.
