UFC fans praise Conor McGregor after he pokes fun at himself with iconic WWE scene

Conor McGregor has engaged in some self-deprecatory comedy as he treads the arduous path of recovery from his recent knee injury. 

The combat sports megastar drew parallels between an iconic scene from the world of scripted professional wrestling, specifically, the sports entertainment realm of the WWE.

A number of MMA and pro wrestling fans have often hailed Conor McGregor as someone who could achieve tremendous success if he were to perform as a professional wrestler in the WWE. Some even assert that it could match the impact he's made as a mixed martial arts athlete. 

Nevertheless, McGregor hasn't made his WWE debut as of yet, although the WWE was acquired by UFC parent company (Endeavor) from the McMahon family and other stakeholders a few years ago. Back in September of 2023, the UFC-WWE merger witnessed the creation of TKO Group Holdings, the umbrella under which both the UFC and WWE have functioned since. 

Be that as it may, McGregor has now reacted to an iconic scene from the WWE's legendary Attitude Era. He harked back to a scripted segment from the WWE (then known as WWF) RAW brand, which transpired on the October 5, 1998 episode of RAW.

It witnessed the real and onscreen WWE boss Vince McMahon, aka Mr. McMahon, face a surprise attack from his archnemesis, multi-time WWE Champion "Stone Cold" Steve Austin. "The Texas Rattlesnake" masqueraded as a doctor and unleashed a barrage of strikes against his boss, even hitting him on the head with a metal bedpan. The comical beatdown, a part of the scripted show and not a real altercation, was etched in sports-entertainment lore as one of the most iconic scenes in professional wrestling and beyond. 

Coming to the here and now, UFC icon Conor McGregor seemingly alluded to another moment from the scene, wherein Austin funnily targeted Mr. McMahon's injured leg. McGregor, who's been recovering from a legitimate leg injury as of late, reacted to a video clip from the WWE scene, drawing parallels between his situation and the Austin-McMahon clash. 

Interestingly, the poster implied that their experience this August has been as painful as the beating sustained by Mr. McMahon. McGregor alluded to it and suggested that he, too, didn't have the most ideal experience in the month of August this year.

For context, McGregor injured his right knee at UFC 329 last month. Well, the Irishman wrote the following on X, "Literally identical lol!"

Fans react to UFC great Conor McGregor's funny WWE post about himself

A number of UFC fans and other netizens soon weighed in on Conor McGregor's post, with many sending him good wishes on his road to recovery as well as acknowledging his sense of humor. 

One X user wrote, "Light work for ya... get better champ," whereas another similarly noted, "Can't wait to see you back champ! @TheNotoriousMMA" 

Meanwhile, some observers went gaga over the legendary scene with "Stone Cold" Steve Austin and Mr. McMahon. A fan stated, "My all time fav scene from wwe," with another noting, "Love this segment with Steve Austin and Vince McMahon during the Attitude era." 

McGregor poking fun at himself -- despite his back-to-back leg injuries in 2021 and in his ensuing fight this July -- appeared to win over fans' hearts. A commenter exclaimed, "Feel better champ!" Others sent him good wishes in the same vein. Moreover, a netizen jested about McGregor's choice of videos: "Your taste in videos is impeccable." 

Presently, McGregor is making waves in the fight game and beyond with his entrepreneurial and miscellaneous pursuits outside the confines of professional MMA competition. Though he sustained a horrific right knee injury at UFC 329, he affirmed that he's undeterred in his quest for UFC glory.

The former UFC featherweight and lightweight champion's next fight would mark the last one on his current UFC deal. "The Notorious" has emphasized that he'd like to fight during the UFC's International Fight Week in July 2027, preferably in a trilogy showdown against Max Holloway.
