PFL CEO John Martin just shut down all the talk regarding Usman Nurmagomeov's future and the rumors surrounding his PFL exit to join the UFC now that he is a free agent.

The combat sports world is abuzz with rumors that lightweight phenom Usman Nurmagomedov is heading to the UFC. However, according to Professional Fighters League CEO John Martin, everyone needs to pump the brakes.

During recent free agency discussions, Martin shut down reports that the UFC has extended a contract offer to the Dagestani superstar. The boss man clarified that such a move would be illegal under their current contract, given the PFL holds an exclusive negotiation window.

Setting the Record Straight

The MMA news cycle moves fast, but Martin isn't letting rumors fly unchecked. PFL’s head honcho believes the widespread claims of Usman Nurmagomedov jumping ship to the UFC are built entirely on misinformation.

"I think you may be wrong ," Martin stated. "There is so much misinformation. The UFC has not given him an offer. They’re not legally allowed to. We have an exclusive negotiating period."

Martin explained that the promotion is actively crafting a strong proposal to keep the 28-year-old talent on their roster. "We’re putting together an offer, and we’re going to sit down and talk with them. I think our offer will be competitive."

While the PFL intends to pull out all the stops, Martin acknowledged that the ultimate decision sits with the undefeated fighter. Currently holding an immaculate 22-0 record with 16 finishes, Usman Nurmagomedov has established himself as one of the most dangerous 155-pounders on the planet.

Martin couldn't help but point out the irony in how the public narrative around the champion has shifted over the years.

"I started saying a year ago, ā€˜This guy is one of the best lightweights in the world,’ and I think people were almost mocking me," Martin recalled. "The original speculation was that he wouldn’t even be top 15 in the UFC... Now I find it kind of ironic that he is being paraded around like he’s the salvation of mixed martial arts."

Despite the outside noise, Martin made it clear that the PFL values its champion immensely. However, if Usman Nurmagomedov decides to walk away and test new waters, the promotion is prepared to move forward.
