The MMA Lab has been a breeding ground for many of the sport’s top talents including former champion Benson Henderson, Alex “Bruce Leeroy” Caceres, and formerly that of a UFC champion in Sean O’Malley. Abdul Kamara could be next.

The MMA Lab is also home to their newest “experiment” in that of a very dangerous bantamweight in that of Abdul Kamara. Abdul Kamara is currently the Fury FC Bantamweight Champion with a successful title defense under his name.

Abdul Kamara: The Atypical Route to the MMA Cage

For most mixed martial artists, training starts at an early age with other forms of combat sports, but for Kamara it was very different. After a spat with his brother, who was an amateur MMA fighter at the time, Abdul Kamara hit his brother for bringing alcohol into his party. At the time, Kamara was not even a fan of the sport, but that knockout would pave the way for Kamara and his MMA future.

“No, I was not a fan of MMA when I first started,” Abdul Kamara began. “I did it because it was a way I could express not ever getting bullied again, but also, Conor McGregor was the man at the time. When I started I loved him because he had that hunger to be the best version of himself. I also liked Anthony “Rumble” Johnson. Those were my guys when I got started. Then I also trained with Ricky Simon during my early career so I got a lot of my fighting inspiration from him as well.”

Abdul Kamara Training at One of The Best

“I’ve been at the MMA lab going on six years now and the coaches I have are a blessing,” Kamara continued. “I couldn’t ask for better coaches. The teammates I have speak for it self. I have the privilege to train at one of the best gyms in the world, and I look up to every single one of those guys in the room. Not only are we together in the room, when life hits in the real world, my teammates are also there for me.”

“It’s more than just fighting at the lab, it’s a brotherhood. We will go to war for each other and I’m blessed to be a part of their journey. I look up to Jared ‘Killa Gorilla’ Cannonier and Benson Henderson,” he said.

“They are the leaders of this army and when I say you couldn’t have a better leader than them, they lead by example. They have personal experience of what it took to get to the gold or fight for the gold.”

Abdul Kamara: From the Hunter to the Hunted

February 2019 would see Abdul Kamara make his professional MMA debut, earning a decision victory. After eventually becoming 5-1, Kamara would sign with Fury FC. A 5-1 run in the organization (now 10-2 at this point of the timeline) earned himself a shot at the bantamweight championship.

All of his time hunting his prey has led to a title fight at Fury FC 107 where he would take a split decision over then-champion Mana Martinez. In January 2026, Abdul Kamara would defend his title for the first time. But what is it like to go from being the hunter to the hunted?

“I love that pressure,” Abdul Kamara said. “It proves that I want to challenge myself to be great. Anyone they put in front of me doesn’t really matter. The expectation I have for myself is to prove that I should be the next Fury champion to grace the UFC cage, God willing, on his perfect clock . It’s coming.”

Competing just a month ago, when can we expect to see more action from the MMA Lab’s next great project? “I’m already asking to get back in there until when the UFC decides they need to put me in there to beat up some of these bantamweights in the UFC organization,” Abdul Kamara concluded.
