When the UFC books a high-stakes co-main event, fight fans expect crystal-clear stakes, but as top lightweight contender Arman Tsarukyan prepares to clash with rising Mauricio Ruffy, former UFC title challenger Chael Sonnen is calling out the promotion for leaving the 155-pound title picture in a weird spot.
Holding a 23-3 professional record with high-profile victories over Charles Oliveira and Dan Hooker, Tsarukyan has long established his spot near the very top of the division. Meanwhile, Ruffy, boasting a 14-2 record with dynamic knockout power, represents the dangerous new generation looking to vault straight into title contention.
On paper, booking them for five rounds has all the makings of a true championship eliminator, yet Sonnen remains skeptical about whether the UFC will actually honor the outcome if Ruffy pulls off the upset.
The Problem With Muddled Stakes
Speaking in a recent interview with Ariel Helwani, Sonnen voiced his frustration with how combat sports handle pseudo-semifinal matchups, pointing out how other sports keep playoff pathways completely unambiguous.
"Why can’t we ever get one of these right?" Sonnen questioned. "I love semifinals. When I’m watching basketball, when I go to high school wrestling or even college events, I love the semifinal round. Why can’t we have a No. 1 contender’s match?"
Sonnen noted that while fans were told the matchup was built to prepare the winner for a five-round title fight, the UFC has a history of changing its stance depending on which fighter gets their hand raised.
" was stated to be a No. 1 contender’s match. In fact, we were told it was going to be five rounds because the winner would be preparing to go in there and fight for the world championship," Sonnen added.
For Sonnen, the issue comes down to preserving competitive integrity. If Tsarukyan wins, his path to gold is clear. If Ruffy gets his hand raised, Sonnen insists the UFC must give him the next title shot rather than forcing him to make another argument.
