“Cop vs. convict”: UFC fans react to bizarre Luis Hernandez vs. Sedriques Dumas matchup

UFC added the light heavyweight bout between Luis Hernandez and Sedriques Dumas to the UFC Vegas 121 card. This has sparked reactions among MMA fans because of its surreal, real-life cop vs. criminal storyline.

Hernandez is a full-time Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office deputy, while Dumas has a well-documented legal history.

Originally, Dumas was scheduled to fight Mickey Gall. The latter withdrew from the bout due to medical issues, and Hernandez, who earned the UFC contract on September 15, stepped in as a replacement on just four days' notice. When he stepped inside the octagon this weekend, it would be just 11 days since he earned a UFC contract by defeating Hugo Guillon in the first round at Dana White’s Contender Series season 10 week 6. 

The UFC announced the fight on their Instagram account, which ignited waves of insane reaction from the MMA world. 

UFC fans quickly flooded the comments with jokes about Hernandez’s profession and Dumas’ past.

MMA personality Nina Marie Daniele simply reacted, writing, “Ain't no way.” 

Another fan praised the UFC matchmakers for putting together such an unusual matchup, commenting, “Matchmakers knew what they were doin on this one. Cooked this up too nice.”

Several fans leaned into the cop-versus-criminal storyline, with one writing, “Cop vs. convict.”  

Another fan took it a step further, adding, “Cop vs robber is diabolical.” 

The matchup also prompted a Grand Theft Auto reference from another fan, writing, “We got a live action GTA 6 before GTA 6, Vice City Cop vs Vice City Convict.”

One fan even joked about how Hernandez could win the fight. He wrote, “Luis Hernandez by Police Brutality.”

Meanwhile, Dumas has a long history of legal troubles;  His record includes multiple arrests and convictions over the years. He has been arrested 14 times since 2014.

Hernandez hit the scale at 204 pounds, which could give him an advantage over Dumas, who will enter the bout seven pounds lighter after weighing in at 197 pounds.

Hernandez holds a perfect record of eight wins and would try to deliver an impressive performance in his UFC debut, while Dumas has not secured a victory since August 2024, so he will try his best to get the job done and get back into the win column.
