Merab Dvalishvili knows exactly what will turn the tide as he prepares to take on Petr Yan a third time at UFC 333.

Merab Dvalishvili was well on his way to making a UFC record for the most title defenses in a year.  Petr Yan, Russian challenger, however, had different plans, handing him his first loss in over five  years. Their second 25-minute sprint, however, has left 'The Machine' with more than simply a letdown.

Merab Dvalishvili Reveals What Went Wrong in UFC 323

After an emphatic wrestling-heavy victory over Petr Yan in their first encounter, few could have expected what happened at Las Vegas. Over five brutal rounds, the Georgian absorbed 139 significant strikes while also suffering 5 takedowns, much to fans' surprise, against only two of his own. Now, Dvalishvili has an opportunity to rewrite that narrative, and he's not letting it slip away.

The former bantamweight king believes he let Yan dictate much of their last meeting. Where wrestling and pressure were his strongest suits, the Georgian exchanged shots from Yan's striking range. That's something Dvalishvili is looking to change this time.

“I think the second fight I was fighting his fight,” Dvalishvili told MMA Fighting. “I was in front of him and then exchanged the boxing, but this time I will just be myself. I think I’ll be much sharper and I know I can beat this guy. He hits hard, he is good, he’s shown, so it’s going to be a good fight. I’m excited.”

This conviction isn't random, however. The Serra-Longo Fight Team star has made significant changes to his training approach to prepare for the trilogy.

Merab Dvalishvili Leaves No Stone Unturned Before Trilogy Fight

Dvalishvili hired a new wrestling coach for private sessions. That shifted his attention from grinding inside the gym to being more intentional with his training.

"The last time I fought Petr, I was working hard. This time, I'm working smart. That's what I need, and I think I’m going to make a big difference," he had revealed in a previous YouTube video.

What makes that change more crucial is the Georgian's regrets regarding his last training camp. The UFC star admitted he had pushed the limit, sparring even on his fight day. The weight cut struggles deserve another mention. All of those issues eventually caught up with Dvalishvili when he stepped into the Octagon.

This time, however, the focus remains firmly on addressing the specific challenge Petr Yan presents: striking and range control. The UFC 333 showdown on Oct. 24 will decide whether that approach has paid off.
