Usman Nurmagomedov has caught flak for his actions following Song Yadong's win over Umar Nurmagomedov at UFC Shanghai.
Usman Nurmagomedov has found himself on the receiving end of considerable criticism after rushing into the Octagon following his elder brother Umar Nurmagomedov's vicious knockout defeat against Song Yadong.
Song Yadong defeated Usman Nurmagomedov's brother, UFC bantamweight elite Umar Nurmagomedov, at UFC Shanghai
Song Yadong was outpointed by former UFC bantamweight champion "Sugar" Sean O'Malley back in January, but he bounced back with a submission win over ex-UFC flyweight kingpin Deiveson Figueiredo in their bantamweight clash.
Meanwhile, Umar Nurmagomedov suffered his first MMA defeat when he was bested via unanimous decision by Merab Dvalishvili and failed to capture the UFC bantamweight belt back in January 2025. Nurmagomedov returned to the win column with points victories over Mario Bautista and Deiveson Figueiredo.
Yadong and Nurmagomedov's respective next fight was their bantamweight showdown that headlined UFC Shanghai in China on August 29. It witnessed "The Kung Fu Kid" stun the MMA world with a second-round KO victory, courtesy of a thunderous right hand and brief ground and pound against Nurmagomedov.
Fans criticize Usman Nurmagomedov for his actions inside the Octagon after Song Yadong's KO win over Umar Nurmagomedov
The corner footage from Team Nurmagomedov at UFC Shanghai showed former UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov (Umar and Usman's cousin) and Umar Nurmagomedov's younger brother Usman Nurmagomedov visibly disturbed by his KO loss.
Usman Nurmagomedov, the final Bellator MMA lightweight champion and the reigning PFL MMA lightweight champion, rushed into the Octagon to attend to his brother who'd been knocked out cold. Moreover, the undefeated fighter, who's lately been linked to a potential move to the UFC, appeared to get in the way of and shove a celebrating Song Yadong.
A number of MMA fans took notice -- with some condemning Usman for his actions, while others argued that he was simply emotional after watching his brother get hurt.
UFC women's flyweight contender Casey O'Neill took to X and wrote, "Did anyone else notice Umar corner man that jumped the cage try to spinning back elbow song as he ran past #UFCShanghai"
Similarly, an X user posted an image of Usman and Yadong briefly dashing into one another, noting, "Sooo, are you guys going to address this issue?" One fan asserted, "He tried to elbow Song too."
Some netizens suggested that Usman Nurmagomedov may have inadvertently hurt his brother by aggressively trying to wake him up rather than allowing the medical personnel to fully handle it. A commenter asked, "Why Umar Team Member Enter So Quick Before Officials?"
A few fans even opined that Usman Nurmagomedov ought to be penalized and not signed by the UFC, given his aggressive actions that could've resulted in a potential altercation with Yadong and his cornermen. An observer said, "What a disgrace. Let the man celebrate his win."
Alluding to Usman's apparent spinning elbow strike that nearly landed on Yadong, a fan seemed to jestingly state that the UFC has a possible matchup between him and Yadong on their hands next, "You have your next match up set up."
All things considered, cooler heads prevailed, and Yadong notably expressed his respect for Umar, Usman Nurmagomedov, and Khabib Nurmagomedov during the post-fight announcements and conversations inside the Octagon.
The Chinese combatant called for a UFC bantamweight title shot next, eyeing the winner of the Petr Yan vs. Merab Dvalishvili trilogy fight from UFC 333. Meanwhile, Team Nurmagomedov signaled that Umar will return from the devastating defeat.
