Sean Strickland took aim at Dustin Poirier after giving an interview on his arrest.

Perhaps one of the lowest moments of Dustin Poirier's life came last month. The retired UFC star's emotional interview reflecting on the incident was equally revealing, offering one of the most vulnerable glimpses into his life outside the Octagon.

The 37-year-old spoke candidly about the pain of seeing his father homeless, his struggles with alcohol, and the difficult adjustment to life after retirement following his arrest for public intoxication.

While many across the MMA community applauded "The Diamond" for taking responsibility and speaking openly about his mental health, not everyone saw it the same way. UFC Middleweight Champion Sean Strickland offered a starkly different response, dismissing Poirier's comments and questioning whether someone in his position had any reason to be depressed.

Sean Strickland dismisses Dustin Poirier's comments on depression

Poirier recently revealed that Father's Day and his complicated relationship with his father weighed heavily on him before his arrest at an Atlanta airport. He admitted he turned to alcohol despite knowing it was the wrong decision and took full responsibility for his actions.

The interview drew widespread support from fans and fellow fighters, many of whom praised Poirier for speaking honestly about his struggles. Strickland, however, saw things differently.

Reacting to the interview on social media, the outspoken middleweight champion argued that depression isn't something successful people should be dealing with, urging Poirier to change his perspective instead.

"I know this is an unpopular opinion, and you've got other people saying like, 'Oh, male depression is a real thing.' Dude, no, it's not. No, it's not, especially if you're like successful, and you've got a family, and you're rich."

Sean Strickland Wishes Dustin Poirier Didn't Evoke Mental Health

He continued by comparing Poirier's situation to people battling life-threatening illnesses - "There are kids literally laying in bed dying of chemo right now that would do anything for one more f**king day on this planet, and you're looking in the mirror saying, 'Oh, I'm sad, I'm sad.' Shut the f**k up."

Strickland also referenced Poirier's airport arrest, suggesting the former interim lightweight champion shouldn't overthink what happened, adding, "You're rich and loved by thousands of people. You're not allowed to be depressed... What you did is got kicked off a flight and tried to fight a cop... relax, it happens to the best of us."

Mental Health Isn't New Topic for Strickland

For anyone who has followed Strickland's career, his response to Poirier is unlikely to come as a surprise.

The UFC Middleweight Champion has gained infamy for sharing unfiltered opinions on everything from mental health and politics to gender identity and social issues. His remarks have frequently sparked backlash, but they've also become a defining part of his public persona.

A few days ago, the 35-year-old found himself at the center of another controversy after reacting to actor Elliot Page’s boxing. In a series of social media posts, the outspoken champion referred to Page as "severely mentally ill," drawing widespread criticism online while once again refusing to back away from his views.

Reacting to a video of the star’s on the mitts, he wrote, “I try not to make fun of Ellen Page. At the of the day she is a severely mentally ill woman who has mutilated her body and done irreversible harm while the left cheers it on. This is regression of America, not progress. Never give into the trans movement.”

Sean Strickland Won't Change

Whether discussing public figures or fellow fighters, Strickland has consistently argued that people place too much emphasis on mental health labels and not enough on personal responsibility, a belief that was evident once again in his response to Poirier's emotional interview.

Love him or loathe him, Strickland rarely softens his opinions to avoid criticism. His latest comments are simply another example of the blunt, often polarizing approach that has made him one of the UFC's most outspoken personalities.
