UFC 330 should be Edson Barboza's last fight
Edson Barboza is one of the most recognizable names in the UFC's lighter divisions, but regardless of his performance at UFC 330, it might be time for him to call it a career.
Edson Barboza will have his first fight in 2026 next weekend at UFC 330. He takes on Esteban Ribovics at lightweight in what he hopes will change his luck for the better. However, even if he emerges victorious, he would be wise to consider retirement after 38 professional fights at 40 years old.
Edson Barboza is on the decline
Years ago, Edson Barboza was one of the most exciting prospects in the UFC. Armed both with brutal low kicks and the kind of explosiveness that reminded fans of the great José Aldo, he was a well-oiled standup machine designed for pure violence. For a while, he seemed destined to make a name for himself at the top of the lightweight division, amassing a 10-0 record. Unfortunately, he suffered his first loss after that, getting TKO'd in round one by Jamie Varner at UFC 146. While he rebounded with a three-fight win streak, he was then submitted by legendary action fighter Donald Cerrone in round one at UFC on Fox 11.
Afterward, his ceiling as a fighter became clear, and the losses stopped coming as a surprise. Though he remained a fun fighter, by late 2017, he was all but figured out. He was a dangerous kicker, but with an aversion to fighting on the back foot. His opponents realized that pressuring him robbed him of the time and space needed to throw kicks with any leverage. Despite being a serviceable boxer, his kicks were his main weapons. With the blueprint out, he found himself 1-5 in his last six fights by mid-2020. Even when he managed to bounce back with two wins, he lost his next two, won his next two, then lost his next three, which is where he is at now. He is coming off a first-round TKO loss to Jalin Turner at UFC 323, and two unanimous decision losses to Drakkar Klose and Lerone Murphy at UFC 319 and UFC Fight Night 241 respectively.
He is 5-10 in his last 15 fights, and turns 41 years old next year. He won't get any better now than when he was younger, and a loss to Esteban Ribovics at UFC 330 would be disastrous. Neither man is currently ranked, and continuing after another loss would be pointless. Even a win changes nothing because, at this point in his career, what is Barboza fighting for? He's unranked and will never fight for a title. Instead, he'll continue to get older and take increasing amounts of unnecessary damage until the UFC's hand is forced. If he manages to beat Ribovics next weekend, he should take it as a chance to retire on a high note.
