UFC 328's Awesome Prelims Saturday Night in New Jersey

7 hours ago5 min read

UFC 328 originates from Prudential Center in Newark, NJ. We take a look at the prelims.

UFC 328 fight week is here. While most people around the United States of America are grappling with what to buy their moms for a Mother's Day gift this weekend, 26 fighters will have more important business to tend to on Saturday.

Prudential Center, home ice of the NHL's New Jersey Devils, serves as the setting for the UFC's flagship event for the month of May. Due to the UFC's card on The White House grounds in Washington, DC on June 14, this is the last numbered card from the promotion for the spring schedule of events.

Live coverage of UFC 328 begins with the early prelims Saturday afternoon at 5 pm ET/ 2 pm PT on both Paramount Plus and UFC Fight Pass before late prelims at 7 pm ET/ 4 pm PT on Paramount Plus. The main card caps the evening at 9 pm ET/ 6 pm PT on the Skydance-owned streaming platform. All told, there will be 13 fights on the schedule this Saturday.

At the top of the bill for the undercard in UFC 328 on Saturday night, it'll be a middleweight showdown matching Ateba Gautier (10-1 MMA, 4-0 UFC) against Ozzy Diaz (10-3 MMA, 1-1 UFC.) This is a rebooking of a postponed fight from UFC 320 last fall. All fights mentioned herein are an advertised maximum of three rounds at five minutes per round.

Gautier enteres the featured preliminary contest having gone 5-0 since securing his UFC contract in the summer of 2024. He'll be making his second walk to the Octagon in 2026 this weekend after besting Andre Pulyaev (10-4 MMA, 1-2 UFC) back in January during UFC 324 on Paramount Plus.

A victory here would make it five in a row in the UFC for Gautier, who hasn't lost in his last nine fights across all competition. Can he extend his winning streak to double digits? Tune in and find out.

Examining Ozzy Diaz Ahead of UFC 328 Featured Prelim

Meanwhile, Ozzy Diaz is sporting a record of 3-2 in the last five contests. On March 8 of last year, he defeated Djorden Santos (11-2 MMA, 1-1 UFC) by way of unanimous decision after three rounds of action.

After that contest, he was slated to fight Gautier in October before he had to withdraw from UFC 320 just days before the event took place due to medical reasons. Diaz has had to wait seven months to fight Ateba Gautier, and this Saturday, he'll get his chance to stop Gautier's winning streak.

Only time will tell if Diaz hands Gautier his first UFC defeat.

Immediately prior to the featured undercard bout, the co-featured prelim takes place at 170 lbs when Joel Alvarez (23-3 MMA, 8-2 UFC) battles No. 14 contender Yaroslav Amosov (29-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC.) The former enters this weekend's action posting a mark of 4-1 in his last five fights.

At the moment, he's won four fights consecutively, including a unanimous decision victory over Vicente Luque (24-12-1 MMA, 17-8 UFC) on Oct. 11 in the Meta Apex in Enterprise, NV. While Alvarez is on a hot streak ahead of UFC 328 on Saturday night, this contest is going to be his toughest assignment to-date under the UFC banner.

His opponent on the other side of the cage is no slouch once the door closes on a given fight night.

Yaroslav Amosov Flexing Veteran Muscles in UFC 328

Yaroslav Amosov, an alumnus of the late Bellator MMA, has a 4-1 record of his own over the past five fights. Heading into UFC 328 this weekend, the 30-fight veteran has won two contests in succession.

During the final UFC Fight Night on ESPN+ in the middle of December, he submitted Neil Magny (31-14 MMA, 24-13 UFC) inside the first round. Upon securing the victory, he'd find a number next to his name in the rankings at 170.

The former Bellator MMA Welterweight Champion knows how to win and his next victory will be a milestone. One question remains to be answered: Will his 30th victory be notched on Saturday night?

UFC 328: Grant Dawson vs. Mateusz Rebecki: Zeroing in on Grant Dawson

Also on the UFC 328 undercard this Saturday night, you'll be treated to a lightweight affair matching Grant Dawson (23-3-1 MMA, 11-2-1 UFC) against Mateusz Rebecki (20-4 MMA, 4-3 UFC.) Dawson makes the walk Saturday having posted a 3-2 record in his last five contests.

Back on Dec. 6, he was on the receiving end of a first-round knockout from Manuel Torres (17-3 MMA, 5-3 UFC) during UFC 323 at T-Mobile Arena. Dawson has followed up his last two losses with three consecutive wins.

Does that statistic hold true again for UFC 328 this Saturday evening? Only time will tell.

Examining Mateusz Rebecki

In the other corner, Rebecki enters Saturday's card with a 2-3 record over his past five outings. He's lost two fights in a row ahead of UFC 328,

Most recently, he dropped a majority decision at the hands of L'udovit Klein (24-5-1 MMA, 8-3-1 UFC) in UFC 321 back in October. Prior to his current two-fight losing streak, he'd won 17 out of 19 fights across all competitions.

Which version of Rebecki shows up in New Jersey? If it's the Mateusz Rebecki who went 17-2 at one point in his career, he'll be in good shape.

Rest of the Prelims

UFC 328's undercard is rounded out by these fights:

  • A lightweight fight pairing Jim Miller (38-19, 1 NC MMA, 27-18, 1 NC UFC) against Jared Gordon (21-8, 1 NC MMA, 9-7, 1 NC UFC,)
  • a middleweight affair between Roman Kopylov (14-5 MMA, 6-5 UFC) and Marco Tulio (14-2 MMA, 2-1 UFC) in the featured early prelim,
