The legendary UFC announcer says Georges St-Pierre’s persona outside the cage is what separates him from everyone else.

Bruce Buffer has announced countless fights throughout UFC history, witnessing generations of MMA greats compete inside the Octagon. The 69-year-old has seen some of the sport’s biggest stars rise to prominence.

From Chuck Liddell and Jon Jones to Islam Makhachev, Buffer has announced fights featuring some of the biggest names in the promotion. Given his experience, he has plenty of insight to offer on debates surrounding MMA’s greatest fighters.

Bruce Buffer Names Georges St-Pierre The Goat

Bruce Buffer joined a livestream with global streamer N3on, where he shared his insights on the UFC. When asked to name his MMA GOAT, Buffer quickly picked GSP.

“I have many, but I gotta say George,” Buffer said. “To me, it’s not how you handle yourself just in the Octagon, how you fight. It’s how you handle yourself outside the Octagon. Classy, you know, a role model.”

Explaining his choice, Buffer added, “Young people today, we don’t have a lot of role models. Right? And I think it’s important because we live in a decaying society of morality. It’s going to hell in a handbasket where people are acting...”

It is important to note that Buffer’s choice wasn’t based on title defenses or finishing rates. Instead, he made a case for St-Pierre based on his character and conduct outside the Octagon.

The Never-Ending Debate

Similar to the Jon Jones vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov and Georges St-Pierre vs. Khabib debates, the Jones vs. GSP debate has been going on for over a decade.

Jones has a resume that demands respect on multiple levels. However, his failed drug tests remain a black mark on his record.

Meanwhile, GSP has no failed drug tests to complicate his position in the GOAT discussion. Ultimately, though, it comes down to an individual’s perspective.

As seen in Buffer’s answer, he picked GSP not because Jones was less dominant, but because of what GSP represents when the cameras aren’t rolling.
