Ian Machado Garry shares thoughts on UFC 330 loss: "Nobody's stopping me"
Ian Machado Garry just lost to Islam Makahchev at UFC 330, but 'The Future' has now commented on the defeat, and he's not going to let it weigh him down.
Ian Machado Garry came within touching distance of welterweight gold at UFC 330. Unfortunately, Islam Makhachev proved to be just good enough to squeeze out a unanimous decision win. While most fighters would hang their heads after losing their first, and possibly only, crack at a UFC title, Garry's spirits seem high on a video he shared after the loss.
Ian Machado Garry vows to come back stronger
UFC 330 marked the first time that an Irish fighter not named Conor McGregor fought for a UFC title. It was Ian Machado Garry's dream to bring championship gold back to Ireland as the country's next-generation star. Unfortunately, Islam Makhachev proved to be as good as advertised, and 'The Future' lost via unanimous decision. However, he isn't letting the result bring his mood down, saying the following in a recent Instagram video:
"Yo, what's up, everyone? Tonight wasn't my night. I feel great, I did great. Islam was just better than me tonight, and that's okay. I want everybody who loves me and supports me and wants to see me do better, I want you to know I'm gonna be back. I'm not disheartened by this. I'm bulletproof in my mind. I'll be back, I'm 28 years of age. I just fought arguably the greatest fighter we've ever seen in this sport, and I pushed him to the f**king wire, and I'm so proud of myself, and I'm so proud of my team and everything that we've done. I'm so proud of what I've done in this world and who I've become. Nobody's stopping me. Nobody's stopping me. Tonight was not my night. Islam, your team, congratulations."
Garry isn't embellishing his efforts either. He made life very difficult for Makahchev, sniping and bloodying him on the feet while proving far more difficult to control on the mat than many had expected.
The loss to Makhachev snapped Garry's two-fight win streak, as following a similarly competitive unanimous decision loss to Shavkat Rakhmonov at UFC 310, he defeated both Carlos Prates and Belal Muhammad via unanimous decision at UFC on ESPN 66 and UFC Fight Night 265 respectively. Now, he will hold his head high for his efforts against a potential GOAT candidate and go back to the drawing board.
