The former UFC welterweight star believes Movsar Evloev has an age advantage over the champion Alexander Volkanovski in their title fight.
Alexander Volkanovski will make the second defense of his second featherweight title reign at UFC 333 on October 24. The 38-year-old will face undefeated contender Movsar Evloev (20-0) in Abu Dhabi.
At 32, Evloev holds a 10-0 record in the UFC. Considering his age and impressive run in the promotion, Jorge Masvidal has expressed concern for the champion.
Jorge Masvidal On Alexander Volkanovski vs. Movsar Evloev
During the recent episode of The Deep Waters, Jorge Masvidal discussed the fight with Dustin Poirier, Din Thomas, and Chris Weidman.
"Movsar is one of the strongest guys, period at 145. It does not fade... That's what I am really worried about with Volk with his age and wear the tear on his body already," Masvidal said while sharing an early take on the fight.
While Masvidal’s point is logical, it is important to remember that age also brings experience. Volkanovski has won eight UFC title fights in his career, while this will be Evloev’s first.
Moreover, Justin Gaethje (37) has defeated Ilia Topuria, a young contender who seemed invincible. Thus, fans could expect Volkanovski to draw on his experience similarly.
Volkanovski Admits Nervousness Ahead of UFC 333
Despite his experience, featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski admitted in an interview that he is nervous heading into his fight against Movsar Evloev. However, it has nothing to do with age.
“When I’m fighting, it’s like, I’m trying to control what’s going to happen in the fight. With this one, you never know what’s going to happen in a fight; you could win it like that. It might not be a tough fight. This is guaranteed; it’s going to get you to breaking point,” Volkanovski said.
Volkanovski knows that Evloev is a pressure fighter with the skills to take the fight to the distance. As a result, the Australian could be pushed to his breaking point inside the cage.
A champion needs to understand both his own strengths and his opponent’s game. ‘The Great’ is simply admitting something that many fighters are reluctant to show publicly: nervousness ahead of a fight.
