Petr Yan brings back his ‘Yan Island’ confidence ahead of UFC 333 as he prepares to defend his bantamweight title against Merab Dvalishvili.

Petr Yan is gearing up to reclaim his territory in Abu Dhabi once again. Ahead of his highly anticipated trilogy fight against Merab Dvalishvili at UFC 333, the reigning bantamweight champion has brought back his playful 'Yan Island" nickname for Yas Island, a place where he has tasted significant championship success. With the title on the line, the Russian fighter is eager to channel that confidence into another unforgettable performance.

Yan and Dvalishvili have already gone toe-to-toe for 10 rounds in the Octagon, with each fighter having claimed a victory. Their third showdown presents both athletes with a chance to settle the score and firmly establish themselves as the definitive winner of their rivalry.

Petr Yan Wants Yas Island to Become ‘Yan Island’ Again

During a promotional interview with Megan Olivi, Yan jokingly suggested that Yas Island should be renamed ‘Yan Island’ because of his past success at the venue. The champion captured the undisputed bantamweight title by defeating José Aldo at UFC 251 in 2020 before returning to defeat Cory Sandhagen for the interim belt at UFC 267 in 2021. Both victories took place on Yas Island.

Now, Yan is heading back to Abu Dhabi, this time with the undisputed championship once again in his possession. He reclaimed the bantamweight title by defeating Dvalishvili via unanimous decision at UFC 323 in December 2025, avenging his loss to the Georgian in their first encounter.

During the interview, he stated how 'cool' he found it that everyone is doing this together in this camp. He revels in the support of his fans, his family, his coach, and his entire team.  However, Yan knows that the upcoming trilogy bout will bring a fresh set of challenges. Dvalishvili is known for his relentless forward pressure and wrestling, which previously gave the Russian considerable trouble.

Speaking about his rival's style, Yan explained that he does not view the pressure as something to be frustrated by. Instead, he sees it as an opportunity to test himself and demonstrate how much he has improved.

“Diamonds are made under pressure,” Yan said, reflecting on the challenge awaiting him.

With UFC 333 scheduled for Oct. 24 at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, Yan will have the chance to defend his title in familiar surroundings. A win would give him the upper hand in the rivalry and solidify his position at the top of the bantamweight division.

For now, ‘Yan Island’ is back—and the champion will look to make sure it stays that way.
