Raoni Barcelos' Scary Demise Against Raul Rosas Jr. Leaves Multiple UFC Stars Shocked and Praying

UFC fighters have seen, and many have even experienced, brutal knockouts in their careers. But the way Raoni Barcelos got knocked out during his UFC Vegas 121 fight against Raul Rosas Jr. sent chills down the spines of several noted UFC stars. Some of them also sent prayers, wishing his well-being.

Raoni Barcelos Got KO'd by a Takedown From Raul Rosas Jr.

Barcelos started the fight on a positive note, taking the upper hand in the striking battle. The Brazilian also maintained his momentum well throughout the rounds, mixing up his striking with his takedown skills to control Rosas on the ground for a significant amount of time.

As a result, Barcelos stayed ahead of his rival on all three judges' scorecards till the end of the fourth round. The Brazilian did look a bit gassed out at the beginning of the fifth round, but hardly anyone could have predicted that a takedown in the fourth minute of the fight would result in his defeat via TKO.

While most fighters pull guard after being taken down, Barcelos' body gave up completely. Rosas Jr. noticed this after landing a couple of grounded strikes and walked away. The official commentators failed to deduce the exact reason behind the Brazilian's demise even after watching multiple replays.

Additionally, Barcelos lay unconscious on the floor for quite some time, with medical officials attending to him. He eventually had to be stretchered out of the Meta Apex, which got several noted UFC stars concerned about his health.

The former UFC middleweight champion, Chris Weidman, mentioned, "Thoughts and prayers out to Raoni Barcelos! Amazing fight but scary ending." UFC flyweight Jeff Molina reacted similarly, stating, "That was a scary ending. Prayers up for Barcelos." The UFC middleweight-turned-light heavyweight, Paulo Costa, also wished Barcelos' well-being. He said, "I hope Raoni getting well."

A few other noted UFC names expressed their take on what may have resulted in Barcelos' KO. While Belal Muhammad said, "He was gasping for air in the 4th round on Rosa’s back; I think the body just couldn’t take that pace," Aiemann Zahabi and Kelvin Gastelum called it the result of an unintentional headbutt. The latter also assumed that Barcelos might have experienced a cardiac arrest.

Gastelum penned, "My personal dumb option. Seems like his head collided with Rosas at the exact moment of the takedown resulting in a flash knockdown and also a possible cardiac arrest given his body was under an extreme stress/lack of oxygen, followed by the blow to the head. Reminded me of Grasso vs Barber not long ago."

Later, the UFC released an official statement regarding Barcelos' condition, which revealed that he had returned to his senses and was responding. It read, "Following his fight tonight, Raoni Barcelos was immediately transported to a Level 1 trauma center for evaluation. The hospital medical team conducted a CT scan and comprehensive assessment, and he is currently being monitored. Barcelos is stable, alert, and responsive, with full movement. He will remain under medical supervision. We will provide updates on his condition as they become available."

While such medical complications have shortened the careers of multiple UFC fighters, it remains to be seen whether Barcelos manages to get back to the ring, defeating the odds against him.
