Dustin Poirier Shares Sobriety Update After Airport Arrest

Joanna Jedrzejczyk is in support of Dustin Poirier in the wake of his sobriety.
UFC legend Dustin Poirier has dealt with adversity inside the Octagon, and now he's doing the same outside of it. Less than three weeks after his arrest at Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson Airport, the former UFC Interim Lightweight Champion shared a deeply personal update on social media, revealing he's been sober for 17 days.
While it wasn't a lengthy statement or a carefully crafted message, a simple screenshot marked his progress. But for a fighter who has openly admitted to struggling with life after retirement, it was a significant reminder that rebuilding often begins with small, consistent steps.
Dustin Poirier Marks 17 Days of Sobriety, Former Teammate Offers Support
Poirier's latest Instagram story featured a sobriety tracker showing he had gone 17 days without alcohol, another indication that the 37-year-old was following through on the promise he made after the airport incident.
In the days after his arrest, Poirier apologized publicly, admitting his relationship with alcohol had become a problem and vowing to make meaningful changes. He later told fans he was "working on myself" and promised to come out of the experience stronger.
The response from the MMA community has been largely supportive, including from former UFC Strawweight Champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk, who trained alongside âThe Diamondâ at American Top Team during their careers.
Speaking about the former lightweight star, the Polish sensation acknowledged just how difficult retirement can be for elite fighters - "Dustin, dude, we love you. He's such a great guy, and diamonds are forever."
Joanna Jedrezejczyk Speaks on Adjustments After Retirement
She also admitted that transitioning away from competition isn't something that happens overnight, drawing from her own experience since retiring from the sport after her war with Zhang Weili.
She said, "I know he can feel lost. I'm still dealing with it myself, even four years after announcing my retirement. It's not easy."
Her comments echoed what Poirier has spoken about in recent months. Since walking away from the sport, the Louisiana native has been candid about feeling directionless without a training camp or a fight to prepare for, describing retirement as one of the toughest adjustments of his life.
Conor McGregor Hopes Longtime Rival Treats Situation as Turning Point
Among those who weighed in was an unlikely voice, Poirierâs long-time rival, Conor McGregor. Despite their heated trilogy, McGregor said he hopes Poirier takes the incident as a wake-up call rather than something to brush aside.
Speaking on the Smash Cast podcast, the former two-division UFC champion warned against making light of what happened, saying, "Take this with absolute seriousness. Do not engage in people... You don't want to slip further and further."
During the conversation, the Irishman also dropped his rival a few words of advice - âHe has to take accountability,â McGregor said. âI seen something, he came out, his father, the blamed his father. You have to take accountability, my man. That's it. I'm not gonna go deeper. I don't want to go into it. It's not my business, you know, and for the sake of his family and his children, his new child born, I hope he comes right.â
That said, âThe Notoriousâ also urged the 37-year-old to take responsibility for what happened instead of looking elsewhere for answers, while expressing hope that the former interim champion can get his life back on track for the sake of his family.
Looking Back on McGregor's Rivalry with Poirier
For casuals out there, their rivalry produced some of the biggest fights in UFC history, but McGregor's comments carried little of the hostility that once defined their relationship. Instead, they reflected the reality many retired athletes face after stepping away from the only routine they've known for years.
Poirier has already acknowledged that the airport incident has cost him professionally, revealing that he lost a sponsorship and remains uncertain about his future as a UFC analyst. But his latest update suggests his focus has now shifted from what he's lost to moving forward one day at a time.
