Marlon Vera details mental toll of four-fight UFC losing streak

The former UFC title challenger opened up about the difficulties of dealing with repeated losses.
Marlon Vera has struggled to deal with the mental impact of his recent losing streak. Riding the roughest stretch of his career, the former UFC title challenger opened up about his mental health struggles and admitted that repeated defeats have made him question whether he will ever succeed again. The Ecuadorian fighter will have the chance to return to the win column when he faces Charles Jourdain at UFC 331 on Sept. 19 in Los Angeles, California.
Marlon Vera Discusses Mental Health Struggles
Vera hasn't won a fight since August 2023, when he defeated Pedro Munhoz. After that bout, the Ecuadorian fighter faced Sean O'Malley for the bantamweight title at UFC 299 and suffered a unanimous decision loss. Since then, Vera hasn't been able to regain his good form and is now riding a four-fight losing streak, the longest of his career.
The four consecutive defeats have come at a particularly difficult point in Vera's career. After reaching the peak of the bantamweight division and challenging for the UFC title, the Ecuadorian has struggled to replicate the form that made him one of the division's top contenders. The setbacks have now left him dealing not only with the results themselves but also with doubts about whether he can get back to winning.
Unsurprisingly, the losing streak has also taken a mental toll on Vera. Speaking on The Ariel Helwani Show, the Ecuadorian fighter opened up about his mental struggles and how he began to question himself.
"It's pretty s—–," Vera began. "It's hard, man. It's depressing. It hits you where it matters the most. I don't even really know how to express it. You put so much into it. You're trying so hard and you fail. Then you say, 'OK, let's get back on the horse. I'm a tough person. I've got to keep my chin high.' And then you fail again, and you fail again. You get to the point where it's like, 'OK, I'm not ever going to succeed again. This is just not working for me.' Then you go into yourself and you're like, 'What's wrong? What am I doing wrong?'"
Now, Vera has an opportunity to change the narrative when he faces Jourdain at UFC 331. While the Ecuadorian enters the matchup looking to end the longest losing streak of his career and regain his confidence, Jourdain arrives with considerably more momentum. The Canadian is riding a three-fight winning streak and will look to extend that run at Vera's expense.
