Sean O'Malley believes his former foe Aljamain Sterling deserves to be next in line for the UFC featherweight title if he can overcome Kevin Vallejos

Former UFC bantamweight champion Sean O’Malley might have knocked out Aljamain Sterling to claim the 135-pound throne at UFC 292, but any former rivalry between the two has turned into genuine respect. As Sterling builds his campaign in the featherweight division, "Suga" is openly pushing for his former foe to get a crack at 145-pound gold.

"I wanna see Aljo fight for a title at 45, I think he deserves it," O’Malley stated, giving his full backing to the former champion's pursuit of a second belt.

Respect Among Elite Champions

Sterling made the leap to 145 pounds after dropping the bantamweight belt to O’Malley, seeking a fresh chapter away from grueling weight cuts. Before moving up, the "Funk Master" carved out an undeniable legacy at 135 pounds, holding the UFC record for most consecutive bantamweight title defenses with three. Since entering the featherweight ranks, Sterling has proved his elite grappling transitions seamlessly, recently securing a dominant decision victory over Youssef Zalal.

O’Malley isn't the only member of his camp who holds Sterling in high regard. Longtime head coach Tim Welch has repeatedly praised Sterling, calling him one of the most dangerous fighters in bantamweight history due to his world-class back-taking ability and relentless wrestling chains.

With the featherweight division constantly evolving, Sterling’s resume as a long-reigning former champion gives his title aspirations legitimate weight. Having shared the Octagon with him in a title fight, O’Malley recognizes the caliber of fighter Sterling remains. If UFC matchmakers decide to grant Sterling his 145-pound championship opportunity, his former rival will be among the first to tune in.
