UFC Legend Avoids 6.5-Year Prison Nightmare but Gets 30-Day Jail Sentence After Latest Probation Violation

Trouble continues to haunt Diego Sanchez, as the former UFC fighter has been handed a 30-day jail sentence by a judge for violating his probation
This ruling comes less than a month after his arrest on an aggravated driving while intoxicated (DWI) charge in New Mexico. The latest development has put his five-year supervised probation in jeopardy, adding another chapter to his growing legal troubles.
Fresh Trouble Brewing for UFC Legend Diego Sanchez
KOB 4 reported that Judge Stan Whitaker sentenced Diego Sanchez to 30 days at the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center. Additionally, the judge ordered the former UFC fighter to undergo drug and alcohol rehabilitation.
Sanchez’s arrest violated the five-year probation he received for firing a gun in Albuquerque traffic in 2025. Although he initially avoided a potential 6.5-year prison sentence, the judge has made it clear that another violation could put him behind bars for years.
“If you’re not going to take advantage of those opportunities, maybe DoC is the call… Let you do your time, parole, instead of multiple cases – but I don’t think it’s warranted yet, Mr. Sanchez,” Whitaker said, also acknowledging prosecutors’ concerns. “I think a sanction is in store with reinstatement, which is what I’m going to do because it’s a first offense.”
Diego Sanchez Sees Surgery PPD Due to Jail Time
Although Sanchez has once again avoided a lengthy prison sentence, his legal troubles continue to mount. According to KOB 4, the former UFC fighter is also awaiting hip surgery, which has been postponed until he completes his 30-day jail term.
“If we come back here again on picking up new stuff, I’m sure the state will jumping from the highest ladder, mountaintop and putting you in custody. I don’t want that but if you can’t take advantage of the programs, I will have no other choice,” Whitaker said.
These charges stem from an incident on Sept. 7 in Socorro NM, where police reportedly arrested the former UFC fighter at a gas station around 5:17 pm on charges of aggravated DUI and probation violation following reports of a disturbance. The arrest also breached the five-year supervised probation he received in March 2026.
Sanchez' latest developments come after a July 2025 shooting incident that attracted widespread attention. During his court appearance, Sanchez acknowledged the potential consequences of his actions but insisted he never intended to hurt anyone, describing the shooting as a joke and disclosing his bipolar diagnosis.
“People do make mistakes, you know,” Sanchez said. “This is Albuquerque, the wild wild west; I made a bad mistake.”
Diego Sanchez' Combat Sports Tenure
With a 30-14 career record, Diego Sanchez recorded 19 wins and 13 losses in the Dana White-led UFC. During his tenure, he secured notable victories over Clay Guida, Joe Stevenson, and Nick Diaz.
He stepped away from MMA after suffering back-to-back losses and later tried his hand at BKFC, but that venture also failed to deliver. Since then, he has stayed away from competition, yet his antics continue to fuel his legal troubles.
