UFC Hall of Famer Diego Sanchez Facing Felony Gun Charges in Albuquerque

UFC Hall of Famer Diego Sanchez finds himself back in serious legal trouble following his latest run-in with law enforcement down in New Mexico.

The 44-year-old original winner of The Ultimate Fighter was booked into the Socorro County Jail on Sept. 7, facing charges of aggravated driving under the influence and probation violation. This latest arrest comes just months after Sanchez barely dodged prison time following a high-profile firearm case in Albuquerque.

Back in March, Sanchez struck a plea agreement that landed him five years of supervised probation alongside 800 hours of community service. That deal resolved a July 2025 incident on Interstate 40, where police accused him of firing a Glock 42 out the window of a moving Jeep Gladiator in traffic.

Prosecutors initially requested a two-year prison sentence for shooting at or from a motor vehicle, a fourth-degree felony charge. However, Sanchez accepted responsibility for the incident, pointed to ongoing mental health and substance abuse struggles, and ultimately walked away without serving jail time.

A strict condition of his five-year probation was total abstinence from alcohol. With an aggravated DWI charge now added to his docket, Sanchez faces potential probation revocation, which could force him to serve out real prison time from that underlying firearm offense.

Diego Sanchez: A Legendary Octagon Career Overshadowed

For mixed martial arts fans who followed his long and chaotic fighting journey, seeing the veteran back behind bars is a tough pill to swallow. Sanchez first captured the fight world's attention back in 2005 by winning Season 1 of TUF at middleweight. Over a professional MMA career spanning nearly two decades, he compiled a 31-14 record while making 32 walkouts inside the Octagon across three different weight classes.

During his prime, Sanchez delivered some of the most electric, blood-and-guts battles in promotional history. His legendary 2009 war against Clay Guida at The Ultimate Fighter 9 Finale earned a permanent spot in the Fight Wing of the UFC Hall of Fame. That same year, Sanchez earned a shot at UFC lightweight gold against B.J. Penn at UFC 107. Known for his intense pre-fight "YES!" chants and legendary chin, Sanchez remained a beloved fan favorite up through his final UFC appearance against Jake Matthews in 2020.

Authorities in Socorro County have not yet released full details surrounding the circumstances of the Sept. 7 traffic stop. However, with serious felony probation violations now hanging in the balance, the Albuquerque native faces his toughest battle yet far away from the Octagon canvas.
