Waldo Cortes-Acosta Gets Big Chance in Main Event Spotlight

This time around in Zuhosky's Take, Drew says Waldo Cortes-Acosta has the most to gain with his short-notice main event at UFC Vegas 124:
Waldo Cortes-Acosta (17-4 MMA, 10-4 UFC) has had a busy 2026 inside the Octagon. It started on the first event of the year, UFC 324 in Enterprise, NV. That evening, Cortes-Acosta squared off against Derrick Lewis (29-14, 1 NC MMA, 20-12 UFC.)
He picked up the victory by way of second-round knockout with ground and pound shots. Since then, Waldo Cortes-Acosta has had bad luck when the cage door shuts on fight night.
He's lost two fights in succession dating back to May of this year, with both of these setbacks coming by way of the scorecards. Less than two months ago in Noche UFC 4, Waldo Cortes-Acosta met Curtis Blaydes (20-6, 1 NC MMA, 15-6, 1 NC UFC), with "Razor" taking the victory.
Waldo Cortes-Acosta With Quick Turnaround in Short-Notice Fight
As recently as a few days ago, Waldo Cortes-Acosta wasn't even so much as scheduled to compete next weekend. A few days ago, however, UFC Vegas 124 had a vacancy open up in the main event of the evening.
Initially, the headlining bout of this Saturday night's card from Meta Apex in Enterprise, NV was to have happened in the welterweight division between Gabriel Bonfim and Sean Brady. Brady would withdraw from the card, however, upon suffering a staph infection.
Subsequent to the announcement of the postponement between Bonfim and Brady, UFC officials worked to fill the vacant spot for the headliner, turning to the heavyweight division. Waldo Cortes-Acosta, the No. 6 contender at 265, was booked to fight unranked Johnny Walker (23-10, 1 NC MMA, 9-7, 1 NC UFC.) This is a five-round fight at five minutes per round to close out the show.
Johnny Walker Comes in Having Fought a Month Ago
Walker is going to be the fresher fighter of the two in this short-notice bout. He last fought on Oct. 3 during UFC 332 in Salt Lake City.
That night, Walker versed Mick Parkin (10-2 MMA, 4-2 UFC) on the undercard, needing less than a full round to score the knockout with a knee shot. While he'll be coming in having only taken a few weeks off between fights, this fight is of crucial importance to Waldo Cortes-Acosta.
The proof is in the rankings.
Waldo Cortes-Acosta Within Shouting Distance of UFC Heavyweight Title Picture
Going into UFC Vegas 124 fight week inside Meta Apex, Waldo Cortes-Acosta stakes claim to the No. 6 ranking in the heavyweight ranks. Although he's lost two fights in a row heading into this weekend, all Cortes-Acosta needs is a statement win.
If he makes the walk to the Octagon on Saturday night and puts on an impressive performance in UFC Vegas 124, Cortes-Acosta is right back in the hunt for a potential shot at the UFC Heavyweight Championship at a later date. With the championship at stake on Nov. 14 in UFC 334, the UFC might call the main event at Meta Apex moving day.
The stakes are high for Waldo Cortes-Acosta on Saturday night. He's been given a chance to improve his stature against Johnny Walker this coming weekend, but it's all up to him. Only time will tell if he's able to secure the victory.
