Carlos Prates Picks Ian Garry to Pull Off the Upset Against Islam Makhachev

From the start of the year, 2026 has been full of upsets. Merab Dvalishvili, Conor McGregor, and many other fan-favorite fighters have taken big losses. Now, looking at this trend, many fans are wondering if Islam Makhachev could be the next big name to lose. Meanwhile, Carlos Prates didn’t waste any time when talking about his prediction. He picked Ian Garry to win the fight.

Carlos Prates Predicts Ian Garry Will Outpoint Islam Makhachev

The UFC shared a video on its social media handles featuring No. 1-ranked welterweight fighter Carlos Prates. The Brazilian doesn’t see Makhachev winning and even predicted how he believes the fight will be decided.
“UFC 330, Ian Garry is gonna beat Makhachev by decision. I don’t know if he (will win via) unanimous decision or split decision but it’s gonna be a decision,” Prates said.

 

For those who don’t know, Prates has already fought Garry last year in April, where he lost to ‘The Future’ via decision. Consequently, that could be one reason why he believes Garry has what it takes to beat Makhachev. Notably, the Irishman has lost just one fight in his career, and that was a close fight against Shavkat Rakhmonov, who is considered one of the most elite welterweights on the planet.

However, it doesn’t mean that Garry is going to win the fight given the no.1 ranked welterweight fighter has said. Makhachev’s last fight against Jack Della Maddalena was seen by many as the toughest fight of his career. But he made it look like a cakewalk and walked out with the belt in his hands. So one cannot take the first ever Dagestani two division champ lightly.

Jalin Turner Backs Ian Garry to Become Welterweight Champion

Not just Prates, but lightweight star Turner also feels Garry has the tools to flip the table and become the new champion. Turner, who is fighting on the same card against Kaue Fernandes, has already trained with the Irishman. So, he knows his strengths and weaknesses.

“I’ve spent some time training with Ian Garry and I know what he’s able to bring to the table on fight night. Don’t be surprised if you see a new welterweight champion after UFC 330, that’s all I can say,” Turner added.

 

Indeed, fans have seen many unexpected losses throughout the year, from Ilia Topuria to Khamzat Chimaev. If Makhachev also loses, it will be one of the biggest losses of the year. And Garry could be the one to do it, which would once again start talks of the Ireland vs. Dagestan rivalry.
