Colby Covington Claims He Would ‘Smoke’ Islam Makhachev In A Wrestling Match

Colby Covington believes Islam Makhachev lacks the skills to succeed at RAF.
Arman Tsarukyan was once the most active wrestler at RAF, but Colby Covington has taken over and is now running through opponents, having already become the RAF Cruiserweight Crossover Champion. With that momentum behind him, he has started calling out some big names from the UFC world.
The 38-year-old recently called out two of the UFC’s top wrestlers, Khamzat Chimaev and Islam Makhachev, for a wrestling match in RAF. Covington has already said he believes he would dominate Makhachev, claiming that Islam isn’t a traditional freestyle wrestler.
Colby Covington Questions Islam Makhachev's Wrestling Skills
Covington believes Islam Makhachev would struggle in freestyle wrestling and doesn’t think his Sambo-based style would work as well in RAF. The 38-year-old said Makhachev relies on a mix of wrestling and Sambo. During his recent interview with MMA Full Mount, he said:
"I think he's more of a sambo practitioner than a wrestler. I don't think he could succeed in straight wrestling. He likes to mix it up with wrestling. I think he'd struggle in traditional wrestling. If he wants to prove me wrong, I'd love to meet him on the mat. I know I'd smoke him too."
He made it clear he would love to test that theory and added that RAF would welcome a big name like Makhachev with open arms. Fans have been curious about the Dagestani making a RAF appearance, but nothing has come from his side yet.
Colby Covington Calls Out Khamzat Chimaev For A Wrestling Match
Covington is already looking for his next opponent in RAF after his latest win. He didn’t waste much time calling out Khamzat Chimaev for a wrestling match. ‘Chaos’ believes he can break ‘Borz’ if the two meet on the mat. During a recent interview with Submission Radio, the 38-year-old said:
“I think I would break Khamzat. He doesn’t have the cardio to keep up with me. He has those quitter tendencies. I will bring those quitter tendencies out of him if that’s the next matchup.”
The Chechnya fighter also had a dominant performance against Gilbert Burns at RAF, which makes a potential matchup between him and ‘Chaos’ even more interesting. Fans are already talking about the possibility, and a clash between the two would be a big deal for the promotion. For now, though, there’s no official announcement, so fans will have to wait and see if it happens.
