Daniel Cormier does not believe that Alex Pereira deserves an immediate rematch against Ciryl Gane following the Frenchman's dominant performance.

Former two-division UFC titleholder Daniel Cormier isn't buying into Alex Pereira's arguments for an immediate heavyweight title rematch. Following Pereira's stoppage loss to Ciryl Gane, the former middleweight and light heavyweight champion has argued that illegal strikes played a decisive role in the outcome. However, Cormier believes a single controversial sequence shouldn't automatically grant the Brazilian striker another crack at gold.

Addressing the lingering debate surrounding the fight's finish, Cormier pulled no punches when evaluating Pereira's case for a quick turnaround against Gane.

“If he's building his case on 'I deserve this rematch based on him finishing me in round number two with illegal strikes', maybe... But outside of that one thing, there really isn't much to warrant him getting an immediate title fight,” Cormier said.

Breaking Down the Rematch Debate

Cormier sympathized with Pereira over the controversial blows in the second round, but stressed that moving up to heavyweight comes with immense risk. Drawing from his own storied career, Cormier noted that when he jumped up to capture heavyweight gold at UFC 226, a loss in that debut would have sent him right back to the contender queue rather than an instant return bout.

UFC CEO Dana White has similarly dismissed claims of corporate manipulation or commentary bias, reinforcing that fighters earn their path. While Pereira boasts a 13-4 professional MMA record with explosive power, Cormier insists that a loss in a new weight class requires fresh momentum. Unless promotional executives step in due to the foul controversy, "Poatan" will likely need to stack another victory against top-ranked contenders before barging back into the heavyweight championship picture.
