With both the fighters eyeing a chance to become the number one contender for the lightweight title, there's one very important detail missing. Up to now, the UFC hasn’t clarified whether the bout is actually a number one contender match. Shedding light on the topic, Chael Sonnen recently spoke out. Soon, the fans joined in on the discussion.

What did Chael Sonnen say About UFC 331 Co-Main Event?

Sonnen recently caught up with Ariel Helwani. Speaking about the upcoming lightweight bout, the former UFC star pointed out that Dana White and Co. must clarify what’s at stake for the bout. Initially, this matchup was being touted as a number one contender fight for the lightweight belt. However, in recent times, that narrative has begun fading away. 

Sonnen stated, “Why can’t we ever get one of these right? I love semifinals. When I’m watching basketball, when I go to high school wrestling or even college events, I love the semifinal round. Why can’t we have a No. 1 contender’s match?”

Sonnen added, “ was stated to be a No. 1 contender’s match. In fact, we were told it was going to be five rounds because the winner would be preparing to go in there and fight for the world championship."

Following such an outburst from Sonnen, fans will wait to see if the UFC does come up with an explanation.
