From a Wooden Stilt House to Legendary Career: Sam-A’s Extraordinary Journey

The 42-year-old Thai legend challenges Aliff Sor Dechapan for the ONE Interim Strawweight Muay Thai World Championship in the main event of The Inner Circle 23 on Friday, July 24, streaming live on live.onefc.com.
Sam-A is the inaugural ONE Flyweight Muay Thai, Strawweight Kickboxing, and Muay Thai World Champion, a former two-sport, two-division titleholder who retired in 2022 before returning to competition and claiming six more promotional victories.
On July 24, a win over Aliff would set up a unification match against reigning ONE Strawweight Muay Thai World Champion Prajanchai PongSuphan PK.
However, behind the titles and the highlight-reel knockouts lies a childhood in Buriram that tells the real story of where this legend came from.
Sam-A Grew Up in a Wooden Stilt House With No Rooms and No Door
The home Sam-A shared with his parents, elder brother, and younger sister in Buriram was as modest as it gets. The future champion described growing up in conditions that would be unrecognizable to most people who know him only by his achievements inside the ring.
"As a child, my life was difficult for me and my family because we just lived in a wooden stilt house. There wasn't even a proper door or anything like that. We didn't have rooms, just a divider. My parents sleep on one side, and us three kids on the other side under a mosquito net," Sam-A recalled.
That upbringing gave him something that no gym session could ever replicate. The hunger, the resilience, and the understanding of what life looks like without the security that most take for granted shaped a fighter who has never taken a single opportunity inside the ring for granted either.
Thai Legend Cried and Threw Things Until His Parents Let Him Fight
The moment Sam-A discovered Muay Thai came through his uncle, a fight promoter who told the young boy he would need his parents' permission before stepping into the ring. What followed became one of the most endearing origin stories in Thai combat sports.
"I was so excited. I ran from the match-ups directly home. It was over a kilometer. I went to tell my parents. They were working at the time. I asked them if I could fight and they said no. I started crying and throwing things around. My parents gave in and let me fight," he explained.
That uncontainable excitement at the prospect of competition has never fully left him, and at 42 years old, he is still chasing gold rather than accepting the quiet retirement he briefly tried in 2022.
Sam-A's Success Transformed His Family's Life Completely
The wooden stilt house with no door and no rooms is a distant memory now. Sam-A has used every opportunity Muay Thai has given him to ensure that the family who once slept on the other side of a divider from their three children no longer has to struggle.
"Now, my family is very comfortable. They have a house and a car. It is easy for them to get around," he said.
Three words – house, car, comfort – summarize what a lifetime of professional Muay Thai has delivered for the people Sam-A fought for from the very beginning.
