‘He’s Ready Tomorrow’: Islam Makhachev Wants Usman Nurmagomedov to Debut Against Justin Gaethje

Makhachev has known Usman from his amateur days and his professional debut, since they are both members of 'Team Eagle. Usman is Khabib's cousin. The team travels, eats, trains, and spars together; thus, Makhachev's words carry weight.

The #1 pound-for-pound fighter spoke about the readiness of the PFL lightweight champion if he debuts in the UFC. 

Islam Makhachev Says Usman Nurmagomedov is ‘Ready for the UFC Title Fight Tomorrow’

Makhachev is currently preparing for his first welterweight title defense against Ian Garry at UFC 330 this Saturday in Philadelphia. 

During a press conference, Makhachev addressed speculation about Usman’s UFC debut and a fight with the champion. "Usman was training with us when he was a very young guy. He was training with Khabib, myself, all our teammates, all his life," Islam said. “And I know 100% he's ready to fight for the title tomorrow or for the contender match tomorrow,” he added. 

Further to back his statement, the welterweight champ talked about Usman’s skill-set. “Because he's a good wrestler, he's a very good striker. He has good grappling. That's why I think Usman did his job great in the PFL. And he's ready to show good performance in the UFC,” he said. 

Islam went further, naming the fights he sees perfect for Usman’s UFC debut. "Someone in the top 5, lightweight top 10 has some good fighters. Usman can fight with anyone: Topuria, Arman. I know his skills, I know what he can do," he said. 

The Dagestani further explained that 'Team Eagle' has the expertise to produce two-division champions and could do the same for Usman in the UFC. "It's a dream for our team because of Khabib and because of myself; we have many tough guys at lightweight and welterweight because we're always training together, giving hard rounds. That's why these two divisions grow in our gym so fast," Makhachev concluded. 

Is Usman entering the UFC? 

After defeating Archie Colgan in the first round via knockout to defend his PFL lightweight title, Usman has become the UFC’s newest interest. 

At PFL New York on July 31, Usman completed his PFL contract with a 22-0 record and 3 title defenses to his name. Thus, he is a free agent.

However, under contract, the PFL has a 90-day negotiation window before any outside promotion gets involved.

Usman has claimed that he is interested in the UFC if they offer a better deal than the PFL. Even Islam stated that, despite the PFL's money, the UFC has higher-level competition. 

UFC CEO Dana White also sounded optimistic about Dagestani’s signing when asked during a presser. Thus, Usman’s UFC arrival seems inevitable.
