Ilia Topuria is often hailed as a great representative of the modern generation of MMA athletes. The 29-year-old is known to adopt some of the most advanced training methods and technologies to ensure optimal performance inside the octagon.

Ilia Topuria shows neurostimulation technology he's using for Justin Gaethje fight at UFC Freedom 250
In a video posted to his official YouTube channel, former UFC featherweight titleholder and reigning UFC lightweight champion Ilia Topuria shed light on the significance of recovery to complement his grueling MMA training.
During one sequence, he underwent therapy with a precisely inserted needle in his torso's tissues, aided by an ultrasound machine. Expounding upon the neurostimulation technology he's using, Topuria stated the following right at the beginning of his video:
"This is neurostimulation with infrared light and serves for various things -- to improve focus, for mental recovery, to improve sleep. They tell us these secrets out there. What I notice most is the focus before training. It's like not even 100 coffees match the effects of this. Like, super focused. I've used it in all my camps. It's always worked very well for me."
Additionally, the undefeated MMA superstar jestingly suggested that the neurostimulation equipment attached to him looks quite weird and one wouldn't prefer being photographed while having donned it.
The Georgian-Spaniard athlete indicated that it's attached to him for around 15 minutes in a session. Topuria implied that despite its weird look, it's quite effective and beneficial.
Another prominent point he addressed is that he uses two separate helmets as a part of the neurostimulation training -- one for before training and the other for after his day's training is done.
Around the 9:20-minute of the video, Topuria added, "Recovery is just as important as training." Moreover, a few minutes prior in the same footage, the expert who oversees his neurostimulation therapy highlighted that optimizing neuromuscular activity, using percutaneous neuromodulation, and other therapeutic elements help fine-tune the UFC icon's body.

Ilia Topuria eyes first UFC lightweight title defense
Ilia Topuria's most recent octagon outing witnessed him move up in weight classes, transitioning from the featherweight to the lightweight division. He clashed against ex-UFC lightweight champion Charles Oliveira for the vacant UFC lightweight championship.
Their high-stakes showdown, which transpired in June 2025, ended with Topuria capturing the lightweight belt by securing a thunderous first-round KO victory over Oliveira.
While Topuria previously notched a successful title defense during his featherweight title reign, he's yet to defend the lightweight title.
That said, he now has the opportunity to achieve that goal, as he's set to fight ex-BMF titlist and reigning interim UFC lightweight champ Justin Gaethje. Their title unifier will headline UFC Freedom 250 on the White House's South Lawn in Washington, D.C., on June 14, 2026.
