Matheus Camilo sees openings in Jai Herbert's game ahead of UFC fight
The Brazilian lightweight believes he can use his striking and grappling to exploit weaknesses in the experienced Jai Herbert.
Matheus Camilo is set to face Jai Herbert at UFC Vegas 122 on Oct. 10 in Enterprise, NV. With the matchup less than a month away, the Brazilian believes he has identified some weaknesses in his opponent's game. Camilo sees opportunities both on the feet and on the ground against the experienced British fighter, while also believing his previous UFC loss helped him develop as a fighter.
Matheus Camilo Learned From UFC Loss
Camilo started his UFC journey with a setback. In May 2025, the Brazilian made his promotional debut and was submitted by Gabriel Green. Following that loss, Camilo bounced back with two consecutive victories and will now make his fourth UFC appearance against Herbert.
Rather than dwelling on his only UFC defeat, Camilo believes the experience helped him identify areas that needed improvement and ultimately made him a better fighter.
"I think my loss taught me a lot – to improve, to fix my mistakes," Camilo told MMA Junkie Radio. "Like a personal (thing), and everything, I think it was very important for me. I don't take this loss like a loss. I learned a lot from it and I think this part of my career made me grow as a fighter."
Matheus Camilo Sees Weaknesses in Jai Herbert
Ahead of their fight, Camilo has already studied Herbert's game, including his 2022 fight against Ilia Topuria. The Brazilian believes the Englishman can struggle when opponents take the fight to the ground or close the distance, giving him opportunities to impose his own style.
"I saw his fight against Topuria (four years) ago," Camilo said. "He's very good. He's a good striker. I think he sometimes struggles on the ground, and I see few spaces I can catch him striking, also. I really like the match. [...] Striking and my grappling, I can work – in the fight, this is going to work. I see sometimes he struggles in the grappling, and he struggles also when the guys close distance to him."
Despite Herbert's experience, Camilo does not believe he is at a disadvantage entering his fourth UFC fight. The Brazilian wants to use the matchup as an opportunity to show how much he has developed since joining the promotion.
"We always need to respect experienced guys," Camilo said. "But I want to show my level. I know he's there for a long time. He's an experienced guy. But I am, too."
