Michael Oliveira not feeling pressure ahead of UFC debut: "Just another day at work"

The Brazilian fighter credits his relationship with Minotauro and his military background for helping him deal with the pressure of his UFC debut.
Michael Oliveira is not feeling the pressure ahead of his UFC debut. The Brazilian will make his first appearance inside the Octagon against Oban Elliott at UFC Belgrade on Saturday, but believes his experiences outside MMA have prepared him for the biggest challenge of his career.
Speaking to Ag Fight, Oliveira explained how his relationship with former UFC champion Rodrigo "Minotauro" Nogueira and his time in the Brazilian Army helped him develop the maturity needed to make his UFC debut without feeling overwhelmed.
Minotauro Helped Michael Oliveira Develop Maturity
Undefeated in his career with eight wins by knockout and TKO in nine fights, Michael Oliveira has plenty of confidence ahead of his debut. And that maturity came from working alongside some of MMA's biggest names. According to the Brazilian, none other than Minotauro played a key role in his development, with the former UFC champion becoming a close figure in his life after they first met in Rocinha.
"I think that's part of why I have this maturity, being around these guys," Oliveira began. "I met Minotauro back in Rocinha. [...] Nowadays, he's my godfather, and I consider him like a father. Just being around people who have been through those situations and experienced those moments. That helped me mature and get to the biggest event in the world without feeling that pressure. Just go there and have fun. It's just another day at work."
Michael Oliveira's relationship with Minotauro is part of a broader environment that has helped the UFC newcomer prepare for the biggest opportunity of his career.
Michael Oliveira Finds Confidence in Experienced Coaches
Other big names in MMA also helped Oliveira feel confident heading into his UFC debut. One of those was Rogério Camões, a longtime strength and conditioning coach who has worked with several top Brazilian fighters, including former UFC champions Anderson Silva and Antonio Rodrigo “Minotauro” Nogueira, as well as Ronaldo “Jacaré" Souza and Mackenzie Dern.
For Oliveira, the presence of experienced figures around him serves as a reminder that he has already done the work needed to be ready for the Octagon.
"I see these mature guys around me," Oliveira said. "Rogério Camões is someone who has been through a lot in this world. When he's there with you, he gives you this sense of calm. He says, 'Go there, you trained hard, you dedicated yourself.' And you really realize, 'Man, I really did train hard for this. Why am I doubting myself? I'm going to go out there, give it everything I have and put my training to the test.'"
Military Background Shaped Michael Oliveira
Besides the big names in MMA that helped him achieve his confidence, Oliveira also counted on another major source of support. After serving for eight years in the Brazilian Army's Parachute Brigade, Oliveira credits the experience with helping shape the mindset he carries into his MMA career.
"When I joined the Army, especially the Parachute Brigade, I didn't know what I wanted to do with my life. [...] The Parachute Brigade gave me that direction: 'I want to be a fighter.' That's when the idea really started to mature. You have to focus, you have to dedicate yourself 100%, you have to give yourself fully to something for it to work. [...] That also gave me the maturity I have today."
Now, Oliveira will have the chance to put that mindset to the test when he faces Elliott in Belgrade. After years of preparation inside and outside the gym, the Brazilian believes he is ready to treat his UFC debut as just another day at work.
