MMA Journalist Breaks Down how Lack of Takedown Success Worked in Arman Tsarukyan’s Favor

Arman Tsarukyan has ruffled quite a few feathers with his impressive performance. Suffering from some significant injury complications, the Armenian fighter’s road to championship took a nosedive earlier, but the manner in which Tsarukyan clinched a statement victory has left the MMA realm impressed. Recently, talking about his tactics, MMA journalist Petesy Carroll had some interesting observations to share. 

There is no doubt that Tsarukyan’s forte is wrestling, and likewise, the 29-year-old star did attempt to get in some takedowns early on against Mauricio Ruffy. When those attempts did not play out well, Tsarukyan switched his tactics, and this is exactly what favored ‘Ahalkalakets’ in the bout, according to Carroll. 

Speaking with Ariel Helwani, the journalist said, “If Arman doesn't attempt those takedowns, I don't think he gets that knockout. He made Ruffy believe the only threat was the takedown to the point where he left himself open for the home run.”

Carroll further added, “That's the brilliance of Arman, realizing in the moment, 'I'm not having success here, but he's biting on these. If I feint low and go high, I could have dramatic and spectacular results.'”

After some initial hiccups, the UFC lightweight star quickly adapted and switched to striking. Just as the first round was coming to an end, Tsarukyan caught Ruffy with some vicious elbows that ultimately led to his win.

Immediately after his hands were raised at UFC 331, Tsarukyan ensured that he kept pushing for the lightweight title. The 29-year-old challenged Justin Gaethje and also demanded him to vacate the title if he couldn't fight soon enough. Now, continuing on his quest for UFC gold, Tsarukyan revealed that the UFC is already working on his championship fight. 

‘Ahalkalakets’ stated, “Yes brother, of course it does. How can I not deserve a fight for the belt with a first round finish? I talked to them, so everything is fine, they are working on the next fight being for the title."

Dana White or the UFC have not yet made any formal announcement about the title fight.
